Not sure about Sulawesi, but the jungle in Borneo is amazing! We stayed in 2 places - Danum Valley Field centre and along the Kinabatangan river. Each has their own highlights.
Danum Valley is a research place, but they have an awesome campsite where we stayed, and one day while walking the trails we saw a wild orangutan in the tree with her baby! Also gibbons and loads of cool birds. But beware..the trails can be quite something - mostly uphill and muddy..and the leeches are RIDICULOUS! And you have to guide yourself. There are people walking around with t-shirts saying "I donated blood at Danum Valley" ..LOL! But seriously, don't let that put you off, as the place is really special! Night drives there were great, too - saw colugos, flying squirrels, leopard cats and there are elephants there, too. We're planning a trip back there next year to hopefully see clouded leopard, bintarong, and the bear.
The Kinabatangan was cool, too - mostly for the proboscis monkeys and we saw some otters and some other monkeys too. Elephants are apparently seen regularly, too.
If you're looking for comfort though, then Sukau rainforest lodge along the kinabatangan is apparently really good
And if you're into snorkelling/diving -you just have to go to Sipadan Island - out of this world. I've been snorkelling and diving in a number of places..and Sipidan is definitely right at the top of my list!
if you're heading to Borneo from Korea..probably best to get a cheap Cebu pacific flight to manila and then air asia flies to kota kinabalu for $40 from there.
Hope this helps! |
