Alright, so it hasn't come to blows yet, but I was wondering how many of you got paid early your last month in Korea?
I fly August 7th but pay day isn't until August 25th. May admin says that it is very difficult to pay me before I leave.
Obviously I want to get paid before I leave korea because I won't be here to collect my money and close my account duhhhh!!!
Anybody else experience this? |

Why are public schools paying departing teachers into their Korean accounts after they leave? What is so hard about paying on time and paying the final pay on the last day? |

Because the law does not provide the extra clause.
Why would one go through extra trouble if it only brings extra costs, and no benefit on ones side?

MIGHT have SOMETHING to do with the fact that they contract you ( in MOST cases) to work to the last day of the month.
I always love the people (assuming the OP is one of them) who are given the luxury of banking their vacation days to the end of contract and then complaining if they haven't gotten the money to you at your convenience, when you demand to have it.
Also could have something to do with the fact that many schools do not get the payment to pay you until a certain date either.
So to answer your question, there is NOTHING hard about paying you on the last day, its just that your last day is the LAST DAY of the month.
Now if you are contracted to the 7th then they should have your money to you before you go,
Now they could TRY to get you paid off before you go, but seeing as though this does mess them up they do not have to.
Now would I wan to do exactly what the OP is doing, of course I would and I am going to try to do just that, but I am not going to get into a huff if they don't pay me.
Heck even SMOES standard policy is that you are supposed to work til the end of the full 52 weeks, so they can avoid these particular hassles, because we always want to be special.
And if the school cant guarantee you payment on time, then you shouldnt be buying a flight home if you havent gotten that sorted out yet. |

Depending upon what your contract states, mine claims that my Apartment security, severance pay and last pay can be (and if they want to) sent to my American bank account after my contract is finished. |

Don't leave Korea until you get paid. After your visa expires, I believe you have a 30 day exit order, which falls within your payday. If they don't pay, which I would guess they are planning on, you can file with the labor board and they'll grant you an extension until your case is resolved.
Also, since this is not happening til August, it is not hard to plan for 3 months ahead of time. |

There is no indication that they are gonna screw you. Koreans will always hmm and hah about stuff. Since OP is Public School(i assume) School, district policy says you get paid on a certain day. They stick to that policy regardless of who leaves when. As you as you get your second to last month of pay, close your Korean account and give the school your Foreign account. Tell them this is the only account they can deposit to and show them the closed Korean account is closed and no longer usable. State that they can cut you a check for your salary on the last day or they can deposit it in your foreign account. Now your severance and apt depoisit and whatever will be at a later time and certainly will not be given on your last day even if your paycheck is |

Once your visa expires you do not have 30 days to leave. You have a few days to leave unless you get an extension (unless things changed).
Your guess that the school does not intend to pay the departing teacher is amusing. What evidence do you have of their intentions beyind your guess of their intentions?
Thats called speaking out of your....
OP:
Discuss this with your employer. Explain your situation.
If you waited to take all your vacation at the end of your contract, then your pay would come in that time frame and the school would not be doing anything wrong.
You can also request that the school wire your money to your bank account back home. That is easy. Then close out your Korean account at your convenience.
You can also request a visa extension and stay in Korea while you wait for your pay or travel for a couple of weeks, come back and then fly home on your schools dime with the ticket they provided. |

Thanks for the responses...especially this one. I'm not at all afraid of being screwed and I'M certainly not complaining about them following the contract, after all, that's all one can ask for.
I was simply inquiring if anyone else worked with their school to get paid before they left. If not, so be it. I'll figure something out.
I need to leave early because I have a family reunion in August and then I start grad school August 16th.

Get online banking. It's great and it provides better transfer rates than the counter. I get at least 10 to 15 points better than counter transactors get. |

No. Severance is (or should be) given on the last day along with the paycheck. |
