I've been lurking here for years on and off, and Daves has been invaluable many times! I've been lucky enough to get to Korea 3 times already, and my next trip next month will be for 18-24months and I plan to marry my Korean gf out there.
So I've got loads of questions such as using my UK driving license in Korea, how to get my ARC, and I guess the big one I'll be arriving as a tourist so allowed to stay for 3 months but when I marry my girlfriend to find the exact procedure of what we have to do and how hard it is and do I have to leave the country and come back on my new visa etc etc.
I'll be working for my company in the UK but working in Korea as a consultant, so still getting paid monthly into my UK bank account, is that ok for Korea? I can prove my income by bank statements and contracts, but appreciate its not a normal situation.
Basically hows the best way to answer all these questions? I've been searching a lot here so found a few things, but anyone got any good FAQ links that are up to date and still relevant!
I'll be looking around for my own answers in the meantime too!
boring thread I guess, but hello! See some of you in Busan/Seoul soon! |

for driving, get your International Drivers Permit (IDP / IDL) sometimes known as your international drivers license from the issuing authority in the UK. It is good for 1 year from date of issue.
You will be able to get your Korean license AFTER you get your ARC.
AFTER you marry your Gf you make a trip down to the local immigration office and file for a change of status from tourist to F2 (married to a Korean). The process is not hard nor is it difficult and it does NOT require you to leave the country (unlike other visa classes that require a visa run).
Your ARC (Alien registration card) is required for all RESIDENT Aliens (foreigners) who will stay in Korea for more than 90 days. You can't get one without a visa that allows a stay of more than 90 days (so you can't get it until you get your F2). You can apply for it at the SAME time as your application for your F2 (just tick the extra box at the top of the page and add another passport photo and 10k won to the application.
The relevant authority in these matters are:
the immigration office ( http://www.immigration.go.kr/HP/IMM80/index.do?strOrgGbnCd=104000 ),
Government for foreigners help site ( http://www.hikorea.go.kr/pt/index.html )
and (after you get your ARC and want a Korean D/L the D/L office ( http://www.dla.go.kr/english/index.jsp ))
