I've looked and searched but haven't found many pertinent threads, so I'm asking here (and please be gentle).
I'm wondering teaching in Korea is possible if you have a family. I have twin boys and a husband who does not have a B.A., but has an A.A. I have an M.A. and college teaching experience, and I'd be looking for a uni job.
Is this possible? I've seen certain positions offer family housing, which makes me think *some* folks must do it...or is it crazy thinking? |

Unless you get a large salary, that's going to be something hard to pull through. |

1- This is not the best time to look for a university position.
2- If you want one of the better university positions, you need to apply from within Korea so you can attend interviews in person.
3- Your family can legally come with you on a spousal visa but your husband will not be able to work unless he can also find work in his field and get the proper visa.
4- Family housing is possible and can be arranged with the better employers but it is not the norm. You may end up in a smaller place.
5- If its only you working, your pay can support your family of 3 (husband + 2 boys) but just so.
6- Your Husband is willing to spend a year or more doing nothing?
7- If your kids are school age you need to consider the expenses related to sending them to an international school (they cost a lot).
So it can be done but the deck is stacked against you. |

My first impression: It would be very hard. But it can be done. My brother works at a university here with his wife and 3 kids (all US non-Koreans.)
Also, there are provisions where a person can work under an Associates degree, but I think the paperwork required and the hassle level will probably deter most Koreans from hiring your husband.
One of the biggest things to consider is apartments. In Seoul, you'd be set up with a one room apartment, most likely. Outside Seoul, you have a chance to get more than one bedroom. The further from Seoul you get, the harder it will be for your husband to find a job. Also, the quality of schools for your sons may drop (or may not, depending on the area.)
I hope that helps a little. Good luck! |
