Trying to follow the directions of the website, I included my original Notice of Appointment and original contract when sending my passport for visa application.

Was I supposed to send only copies?

They sent back my passport with visa stamp, plus original NOA, but not the contract.

Yes. I made digital scans of the NOA and contract and apparently that's enough. I had not printed out copies but have now printed two sets.
