I wonder if that will become a new term - "Disney English"
http://www.disneyenglish.com/EN/homepage.html
I'm posting it here because I can't imagine that if it actually takes off in China, Korea won't be far behind. Seriously, I'm surprised it's not already in Korea what with the cutesy-tootsey stuff around already
if you look on the right side, under "work for us" they're even calling the teachers "Disney English Trainer" etc etc. scarey stuff
so what's up folks? new direction for English? or just new coat of paint on an old appliance? |

yeah I've seen the China ads. Look, I'm an adult man, I'm not gonna get on my hands and knees and coo about Mickey to small children crapping themselves. I'll just go back home and work at a 7-11 for $300 a week. |

I've seen English textbooks here (in Korea) that were completely Disney themed. I can't remember now who the publisher is. I remember that each unit was full of pictures from a different Disney movie (mainly the more recent ones).
I've seen similar type books in other countries as well. Usually Disney characters teaching English to kids. Sometimes other cartoon characters. I haven't seen a whole Disney school though. I can imagine though. I doubt it would be much different than any other large kiddy language school. |

After looking through their website and watching the promotional video, it looks ok. They appear to be well equipped and the methodology seems good for encouraging the kids to actually learn English (as opposed to simply preparing them to pass a test). If the "Working at Disney English" is true, then it seems like a good job for teachers as well. They offer training and team building activities as well as field trips and parties.
Jobs in China don't pay much compared to other countries, but a lot of schools there DO try to keep their teachers happy. (Although I met plenty of teachers there who WEREN'T working at such schools.) I think that the working conditions for NETs in China is generally better than in Korea. The main reason people don't go there as much is probably the salary. Just my observation. |

I've heard about Disney English in Taiwan. I think they've been around for a while, at least the Taiwan one.
Yeah, if the curriculum is sound, it could be a really fun school to work for... if you like little kids and don't hate Disney. Actually, come to think of it, some Disney songs aren't that bad. It might be better than teaching the songs at most kiddy hogwans.
Personally, I don't have it in me. Don't like lil' kids, don't like Mickey... I imagine the kids who go the school would have really obnoxious parents, too... the yuppie trend followers. |

If the place is not actually affiliated with Disney, Disney will come down HARD on them if they ever catch wind of it. They are serious about their trademark and go after everyone they find who uses it. |

Disney can't do much in China. Surely you've noticed that theme park in China with obvious Disney branded characters. Yeah, Disney can complain about it but nothing will be done. |

Of course it's real. Disney will stamp it's name on anything that has to do with children "learning" so long as they can suck every penny possible out of it. I've heard of the working conditions in the U.S. places. I don't even want to imagine what they get away with in China.
Disney: Sucking the souls out of your children for the last fifty years!! (so we can feed them to Walt Disney's reanimated head, that's where the idea for The Princess and the Frog came from) |
