A while back at the hagwon I teach at I was pulled into a meeting with my boss and another teacher acting as a translator. The meeting was simply to inform me that I had used 3 of my 10 days of my paid vacation so far. My contract states my boss gets to pick my vacation days. But still, I've only had one actual vacation day so far. The other two she claimed were the snow day in February and Election day, which, as far as I can tell, is basically a national holiday.
Is this normal, or is my boss just trying to screw me out of my vacation?
Everything else with the school has been fine, I've been paid on time, and my boss has, for the most part, been helpful, despite not knowing a thing about teaching English, but she definitely buys into the Korean ideal of working 174 hours a week.
Any thoughts? |

happened to me. we closed shop on random days and my director was like i'm just going to use some of your vacation days. my director is kind of a pushover though and i basically told him no and to just not pay me for those days. he obliged and i still ended up being paid for those days anyway.
tread carefully, but definitely bring it up. when you only have 10 days, each one is worth a lot. don't want to waste them on snow days. |

Does your contract really give 100% control of your vacation days to your boss without your consent, authorization, or approval? If so, it's a terrible contract. Even in this case I'd try to push and say that it's crazy to think of those as vacation days.
If not, then snow days and election days are not vacation days. |

jonpurdy: yes it does, "vacation days are to be determined according to the schools schedule"
furtakk: I agree, but at this point, I'd rather be on the good side of my director and lose a few vacation days than be on her bad side and risk getting fired or losing my severance.
My boss isn't malevolent, she's just not all there.
For example, she doesn't actually know when summer vacation is. I'm trying to save money, so I'm not planning on going anywhere, so it's not a problem for me, but still, she has absolutely no idea. And she owns the place. |

She doesn't know because the Hakwon Association hasn't told her yet. I'm not trying to make a joke here. They organize it so they all close at the same time. |

no,
yes.
my first contract was at a small hakwon in the outskirts of jeonju; Children's Day approached and I saw a ceremony outside of the elementary school the day before on my way in. I distinctly recall asking about it and my director was all smiles as she spoke of Children's Day but never mentioned it being a national holiday, just that it was a big deal for the kids. the next day there was no school but our hakwon was open. the only students that showed up were the director's kids and their cousins. why? because I didn't know it was a natl holiday and that it should have been my day off also - since it was in my contract "all Korean Holidays."
I didn't even know until the next year when it was given to us (different school).
at that point (in the first contract) I had been in Korea about 6 months. Things were going pretty well and I never, ever would have believed that woman would be cheating me the way she was - more came to light later but it's incredible what some will pull with a NET.
have a sit down now before it gets worse and clarify your vacation days. you never know, maybe someone back home gets sick and you want to fly back, or you get in a relationship here, whatever, that's YOUR time, if you don't take care of it, you will lose it (if you haven't already!). |
