so iv been offered a job at a private school in busan, so there is a definite job waiting for me in korea. i have to accept by monday and i have done a lot of research on this place and it looks ok, but i know theres better out there. iv also applied for EPIK, but my interview wont be until the last week in june apparently, and it is EPIK that i would rather do.
my conundrum is this - can i accept the private job, wait until the EPIK interview and if i get that decline my offer at the hagwon? it wont affect any future applications i make will it? and if i dont get either and wait longer and longer, do schools offer less money cos they know that suckers will snap it up? |

If they haven't offered, or you haven't said yes, then playing the waiting game is completely fine.
However, the phrasing of your post suggests that they have offered you a contract and that you have agreed to it...in which case:
People do rude, inconsiderate things all the time, so you could certainly be one of those folks.
I mean, really...if they said, "OK, the job is yours" and then pulled it out from under you in 3 weeks, wouldn't you be upset and complaining about how "you got skrewed over by a school" and they "broke their promises?"
...and I am sorry, but if you are going to screw a school over for the chance to work for EPIK...I mean, come on, have some standards! Holding on for a college gig, MAYBE I can see the situation (naw, it would still be wrong), but for EPIK? |

You should do the school a favor and turn them down, just wait for the EPIK interview. If you are dishonest enough to take a contract knowing that you intend to break it, the private school is better off wihout you. |

EPIK's probably not going to keep applications open until the end of June. Maybe you should do the honourable thing that's also in your self-interest and take the job you've been offered.
To be frank, goatlord, and I'm conscious of not becoming a foam-spittled Dave's stereotype, but I think you should adopt less of a mercenary attitude. I've been in application limbo since the end of January and am only now at a point where getting a contract looks like a distinct possibility. These aren't prizes that we're competing for. They're jobs. |

If you want the public school job more, wait for the interview before committing yourself to another job. There will be plenty of hagwon jobs available if it doesn't work out. |

Who is "they"?
I was raised that you don't leave your ethics at the door just because you are moving to another country. |

I would decide on one or the other, it's not very fair to be juggling 2 potential job offers when others would be willing to take any.
I understand wanting to get the best offer, but you should probably decide soon. You could always do EPIK the following year if you like Korea |

Aside from the moral issue that I won't get into here:
IF you say yes to the hakwon they probably want to start your visa application ASAP. IF you send your documents to them and they (apply for or) get you a visa confirmation number then you WON'T be able to change your mind for 90 days after (until the number expires).
It means that you can't get a visa for EPIK with an outstanding visa confirmation number for a hakwon.
Also, if you accept the private job on Monday then you will probably be at work in Korean before your EPIK interview is even scheduled. Once things start to move, they can move pretty fast (bali-bali). It can be as little as 14 days from number application till you get on the plane.

You see Tom is a gentleman and an all around nice guy. I on the other will say what Tom is thinking.
Sure you can do it...if you are a douchebag and your word means nothing. (not a personal attack...just an if statement).
So you say yes and they stop looking for a teacher. You later say no and have to start the process all over again. Way to screw a school over and make the job harder for the next foreigner.
Just stay out of any foreign country til your mom and dad can teach you about morals and what your word means. |

Morality in and of itself as an abstract is random. What you perceive a a set in stone way of acting or social contract, others may perceive as maleable, or subject to change without notice. Have fun.

Do whatever serves your interests the most.
That's what business ethics classes teach these days. They've learned that they can't teach morality in their own flavor, they can merely present scenarios and the repercussions of actions we take.
Every risk has a reward, it also has a penalty.
You can't fight human nature, so I prefer to work with it. |
