I put in a 2.8 P4 but my bios says "1.4" during start up. On the control panel system properties general tab it says both 1.4 and intel pentium 4(R) 2.8.

Is that ok? I think it should say 2.8. The pc does work better tan it used to with the 2.6 celeron.

Thanks

I remember reading on the net that sometimes you should upgrade the bios on the motherboard to accept the right processor.

You should ask a computer shop when you get the chance.

It's running at half speed as processor is meant for a board with a 4 x 200MHz FSB while your board does a 4x133 FSB. Buy a new motherboard.

Dammit. This paycheck was gonna be different, gonna save money, just this one little thing....yeah right. My memory likely won't work either in the new board. Good thing I live mere blocks from EMart. Thanks for the help Gord.

Well...first check your motherboard make and model number, then find out the max processor speed it's rated for. If it's capable of handling your new chip, the you probably have to set a jumper on the motherboard or change a setting in the BIOS.

This happened to me, actually. I installed an AMD 2500+ in my brand new motherboard and it listed as an AMD 1100+. I had to switch a jumper on my motherboard, then bam, everything worked like clockwork.

Anyway, for more specific information, crack the ol' case open and find out some information about your motherboard.

"Max processor speed" is independant of the Frontside bus. His problem was his motherboard FSB runs substantially slower than the what his processor FSB was capable of.

Do you think the PC upgade will improve the quality of my posts?

No, I don't think so.
