I have to teach 10 freshman optical students 5hrs a day for 1week. I have a book from the college, but it's pretty bad. The head of the department wants me to teach them English related to their major. Any suggestions? |

I guess they're studying eyes and not alcoholics, so you could try and look for eye stuff. |

Each day you could teach them some optical related terms, the rest of the time just general English in a optical environment like an eye doctors office or the like but still focused on general English conversation.
You need a comprehensive plan on how you will reach specific language goals, but also I think you want to come with some kind of project to break-up the time and have some fun. Maybe two teams, so you can spend at least one hour - 90 mins on it, with maybe two - three hours on the last day.
Projects I have done in the past are:
- Create teams and have each team come up with a team mascot (maybe the goal of each team is to design the best optical lens?) . Make up posters rooting for their team. It just opens up speaking in English to describe what they are making and what it symbolizes. Take off from there on teaching opportunities to help them express their ideas.
-A Caveman to English translation of the Blur Studio video of In the Rough http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQdqaSITVyI
-A movie review of an in class movie that will be published (I just publish mine on free website I start for the class). No idea off hand but maybe a movie that features a blind character.
You can combine all three, have them make the mascots and posters as teams to do the Caveman to English translation and then have as a group write a review of In the Rough
Good luck |
