if i pack up all the needed stuff for an e-2 visa and fly to seoul myself (and stay at my girlfriends for a month or so) will that work? she is korean and owns her own place.
will they pay to send me to japan for a visa? will they pay me back for my flight over?
is this a good idea or am i crazy?

If you have not had an E-2 visa before, you will have to get it from your home country.
Many people like seeing their boss, workplace, and apartment before signing a contract. Most places will pay for at least your visa run. |

Visa run is possible (if you have all your documentation in order).
You get 90 days from date of entry to find a job and do the visa run or leave.
You will NOT likely be paid for your flight over. Your employer should cover all the costs of your visa run (but confirm that they pay for it all and not just the airfare for the visa run.)

You are initially coming here on a tourist visa right? I think most countries are allowed 3 months. In that case all you need is a flight out of here before the 3 months are up. Immigration may ask to see this if they suspect you are coming here to work.
Keep your documents in your case and nobody will inspect them. If immigration asks you, say you are a tourist.
And stop worrying about nothing. |

I know the OP previously had an E-2, but just for future reference....this is incorrect. You can get an E-2 for the first time without going to your home country. You just need to have your original degree verified through some Koren gov't agency (can't remember the name, but Korean Education Verification Agency has a nice ring to it, if you do a quick search I'm sure you'll find it). If you do that first, then you can hop a flight to Japan for the visa run. |
