I visited there for a job interview before. This city is tiny. Maybe about 150,000 tops. It is pretty beatiful with mountains and lakes nearby. If you like nature it would be a great place. Otherwise, i would advise someplace else. |

Well I'm not sure what I want really. My first time over and all, I do love the outdoors and nature (photographer), but want to be around other foreigners for at least my first year there.

Jecheon is, as Fubar said, a small town of about 150,000 people. It's in Chungbuk-do, about 40 kilometers southwest of Wonju.
I'd guess the reason you haven't heard of it, just because, is probably because it's a rather unremarkable place.
Some of the foreigners are quite content and happy in Jecheon, while others can't wait for their contracts to be finished so they can leave. Depends what kind of lifestyle you want, I guess. |

Jaechon is in the North East of Chungbuk Province. The population is approx. 150,000 give or take.
It's about 1 hour from Chungju (Not to be confused with Cheongju) and 2.5 hours from Cheongju . There is a train station there which can be taken to Seoul (about 3 hours ) |

Eesh, city people. Where I come from, a population like that counts for a good-sized city.
Never been to Jecheon, but unless you're addicted to big-city comforts I'm sure it would be fine. I'm living in a town about 1/5 that size now, and have no complaints (at least none related to the town's size).
The key thing to bear in mind is that the foreigner community will be quite small, probably not much more than 10. So if hanging around with white people is a priority, you're probably better off in a really big city like Busan, Seoul or Daegu. |

I think the quote above is the most important part of your post.

I guess it depends on what big-city comforts you mean. There are virtually no western restaurants (a Popeye's did open recently), very limited availibility of western-style food products, and not even any decent movie theatres. No particularly large grocery stores, either. Have to make the 40 kilometer trek to Wonju for that.
Living in small-city Korea is certainly not for everyone.

There are considerably more foreigners in town than you opine, but as we've already covered, you've

Where you come from, everyone probably lives in houses, thus making a city seem much larger. Over in the small cities, 4-5 apartment complexes can make up half the population. Right now, I am in a small city. It's safe to say that a city with 150,000 has the feel of a city of about 20,000 back in Canada, including less ammentities (by Western standards) |

I'm going to Woraksan to climb it next week so that would be near Jaechon right??
Anyhow...definantly a small city but they have their charms.
Got an LG25, you should be alright. |

Thought I'd bump this old thread because I've been shortlisted for a job in Jecheon, at Semyung high school, which I guess is attached to the university there. Teaching high school kids is a plus, and 8 weeks of vacation is a big plus, but living in such a small city? I dunno. I lived in Daejeon for a year and liked the semi-big city feel (600,000 people I think). Also, I could find foreigner food if I wanted (I usually get the craving about 6 months in).
Anyone live there now? Has anything changed since these last posts? Could I even get internet in this type of city? |

There's at least one person on this board who is living there now and a handful of foreigners from what I've heard. I don't know anything about it firsthand, though. |

I have a friend who was there for a job, but I'm pretty sure he just moved to Seoul. He spent every weekend up in Seoul anyway. |

Nice place. About twenty teachers(from what Ive heard). Western food is limited. Popeyes chicken, hamburger joint or three, Baskin Robins. No english bookstores, or newspapers for that matter. People aren't rude but keep to themselves. Very few Koreans there speak English.
One movie theater.
Is great for nature lover. Can hike or ski nearby.
Plenty of bars but unless you speak Korean will prob find yourself in Seoul for a night out to drink.
Yes you can get internet. Theres a internet cafe every twenty feet. Or get broadband in house. Even wireless access here and there. Its not some hick village, its a modern city, just small by Korean standards. The whole 150,000 feeling like 20,000 in Canada don't apply to Jecheon. |

Yeah, Shoeboy's got it. Jecheon's changed a lot, over the years that I've been here. Many more foreigners have moved into the area. There's a new multiplex movie theater in town that hosts the Jecheon International Film Festival in August, which was great last year. There are several new western style restaurants in town, too. I know that high school, too, and the foreigners that have worked there have always been happy with their job. Sounds like a good place to work. Jecheon's a good place to live, I'd recommend anyone to give it a try. |
