Hello all!
Just had a quick question regarding hours. I'm a first time teacher who is being offered a contract with Poly. The pay is about 2.6 mil, but the hours are Mon-Fri 9:00AM-7:30PM. I'm not sure how the time is broken up, but I'm making sure to ask during my interview tonight.
Assuming an hour for lunch and an hour prep time, how fair is this? Does anyone else work long hours? Is the money worth it?
Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

| Take the job, the workload is little more than other schools, but you don't have the 40 minute breaks between classes, having to sit around doing nothing. I would work 12 hours a day for 2.6 mil. |

I make 2.5 and work 8hrs a day. Are you desperate?

I work 10-4 M-T (No Fridays) for 2.5.
There is better out there. But it seems you've already decided to take the job. If you want it, take it. But you can do better. |

The problem arrises because you are paid for "class time" and not your "desk time" in a hakwon.
The real question to ask is, "How many classes?" do you have to teach and how long are they? Are you required to be in the hakwon when you have no classes? How much prep is really expected or required?
With hours like that it sounds like a kindy hakwon with some elementary/middle school classes after 3pm. It is an ugly shift but people still take them out of desperation (loans at home calling?).
Be careful. It can be a long year with a shift like that. |

| Koreans work more hours and make less, so I think you will live. you certainly won't have classes the whole time as that would send you far beyond the 30 hour contract. Just means a lot of prep and facebook time |

| I would wait it out. Maybe this 930-730 job sounds tolerable on paper. But after a couple months I think it will begin to take it's toll. You can easily find a better job |

While we are bragging, I work 8 hours and make 2.5. That's not including 6 "after school" classes (which actually fall within the normal school hours). At 30K an hour. I've got two years experience though. So, I'm only a relative n00b, not a total noob.
OP, as long as the hagwon is legit, you could probably do a lot worse than this for your first year. |

I don't consider sitting at a desk doing internet shopping 'work'. |

Hey all,
Thanks for the replies. Just finished the interview and it does appear to be a kindy morning school with afternoon elementary. Teaching hours are 33.5 per week.
The owner seems pleasant enough and she agreed to give me the contact info for the native English speakers who are there already. So far, everything seems on the up and up.
I guess my biggest concern is biting off more than I can handle for my first job over there. I've dealt with kids that age before, but will it be worse due to it being a different culture?
In the end, yeah, I'm going to have to decide for myself if I'm up to it, but I still value the advice from vets such as yourselves. Thanks for the input, and keep it coming! |

Seoul had a GDP per capita of $31,095 in 2007.
It that about 3 million a month given the exchange rate? (maybe slightly less?)
Put it this way: Only 22% of Americans have a college degree. Considering how educated we are, we are not making huge amounts of money compared to the locals.
Also, the per capita GDP for SK is significantly higher than it looks on paper because so many people here under report their income in order to cheat on taxes. Did you know that 6% of America's economy is underground (due in large part to illicit drugs I would guess), but that 30% of Korea's economy is underground?
South Korea's a rich country- one of the richest in the world. |

+1 My teachers teach about the same amount of classes as I do(20) but waste alot of time doing the above. |
