I moved to Korea a week ago and for some reason when I download a torrent, it never starts actually downloading. Is this a Korea thing or could it have something to do with me living in a dorm?

Thanks for your help.

It's probably your dorm. I know some other teachers who have the same problem in their on campus housing.

My guess would be there is a firewall blocking the port.

The weird S&M guy above is right.
This reads firewall.

There are many ways around it.
proxies, direct streaming, different host sites(mirrors), and different torrent programs are just some of them.

Another easy solution is to go to a cafe with free wi-fi and test it out.

I was using utorrent for a while and it was working great. About a week or so ago an ISP person came to our house because the internet/tv was going off suddenly for a few minutes. It was around this time that I patch utorrent to 2.0.2, from 2.0.1. It stopped working and I am not sure if either or both of these events are resposible.

It simply doesn't start downloading anymore. All the arrows are red and there is not activity. Not sure what's up.

There are a few torrent websites that block utorrent for some reason, just fyi. I had trouble with that and switched over to vuze/azeurus and it worked.

Check the FAQ on the site you are using for a list of approved clients. Some of the ones I am on will accept utorrent, but they want the 1.8.2 version, not the new ones. If you use a new one on some sites it won't work and might even get you banned.

As diver said, it's probably the version of the software that's problematic. The site could also be down temporarily, if all the reds are from the same site...

i'm pretty sure it's a router issue. happens in dorms.
follow the link and see if the port you're using is open or not.
http://www.utorrent.com/testport?port=your port here
if it's blocked, ask around and use a port that's open.

plus, enable protocol encryption (preference - bittorrent - protocol encryption). isps in korea seem to have blocked bittorrent packets, this doesn't mean you won't be able to dl/up, but slower. encryption solves the problem.
