My old laptop kinda got old and slow on me so I went to Yongsan Electronices Mart, the extension back there where you have to walk through that long walkway that goes over the railroad tracks.

After shopping around it seemed to me that the best deal was at one particular shop where the guy offered me a Dell Inspiron with lots of HDD and memory and an i5 processor......for around 1.15 Mil KW.

Bottom line is I didn't catch the fact that the machine didn't have a genuiene version of Windows on it. Reason I know (now) is because since I got it back here (Gumi) yesterday I've gotten two or three messages that say I'm not using "genuiene windows". Now, upon looking at the 'stuff' they gave me with the unit, I notice the conspicuous absence of anything mentioning Windows or Microsoft.

Yeah, I know.....I see how dumb it was now. I should have realized something stunk when I did notice that it didn't have an English language operator's manual.

Anyway, I've still got the receipt, etc. Does anybody have any idea what my options might be on going back there and getting my money back...or what?

Was Windows part of the deal? It's not always included in the price of the laptop. Sometimes you have to buy your hardware and software separately.


Perhaps this guy was selling laptops without Windows pre-installed.......hence the good price......so I'm guessing the vendor thinks he's doing you a favor by putting his dodgy old pirate Windows on there. It's better than nothing.


If you want to buy genuine Windows then go back to the vendor, tell him you want the real Windows and see how much he charges.

Better off downloading a better bootleg Windows, or Linux if you can handle it (it's free). Why pay for Windows anyway? Microsoft doesn't deserve a penny.

If you are getting those messages about non-genuine-ity, then there is a program that will remove the files that are causing the message to pop-up. It's called .....I don't remember...just google "how remove windows genuine advantage".

I still don't understand why some people feel that MS doesn't "deserve" the money for their product. But that's another post...

OP, if you have proof you bought the machine from a valid seller, ie. a receipt showing your purchase, if you submit that to MS and show that you thought you were getting Genuine Windows, they'll help you out.

From all of my looking, Dell's always come with an OS. I've not been able to find otherwise. Contact Dell if you can and see if they can help you. If the guy was not an authorised seller though, you might have problems.

I heard something about Microsoft making a pirated copy legal for a small fee. It's less than buying the whole OS from scratch. Not a bad way to get windows on the cheap if it's true.

you can get a Windows 7 Ultimate cd-key off ecrater for like $40US. Just make sure you go for one with good reviews

Get a good cracked copy of Windows 7 Ultimate from a good torrent site.......no validation problems......works like a charm.

Do a clean install. Laptops are usually bogged down with bloatware when you buy them.....wipe all that stuff out......your laptop will run faster and be easier to manage.


I can't understand anyone who thinks they should pay Microsoft for software........do you really think Microsoft needs your money? Then there's the people who think the pirated versions don't work properly....haha....they do....exactly like the legit versions.....absolutely no difference...

Slow down. Dell is special

Dell deals in volume licensing that doesn't need activation. What model of laptop do you have? If you search the torrents you'll likely find a copy of the Dell OS CD that fits that line of models and you can install your OS perfectly fine and it will work legit.
