Kim's Recruiting : http://kimsrecruiting.cafe24.com/default/
I signed a contract with them and will be heading over to S. Korea in about 2 weeks once my passport comes in the mail. I haven't been able to find anything about them on the internet and was wondering if anyone has heard of or dealt with them? I'll paste my contract below (I know there's a separate link to do that but since I'm already posting here I thought someone might be able to tell me exactly what I signed up for...lol). I don't have any experience teaching grade level students, so I'm a serious noob here. I appreciate any and all comments!
My contract:

Seems you're already committed but this condition is uncommonly harsh.
You'll survive, but you'll also gain an appreciation for how much a real break is worth to a teacher. |

Thanks for your feed back! Yeah...I know it's harsh, but I'll find a way to work the system! Haha! |

No. The pay should be paid on the last day of the pay period. Your pay period is the 1st day of the month to the last day of the month. It's about time for these people to either buy a computer or start using a bank that has computers. There is no excuse, since the early 1980s, for any employer to delay payments in this manner, and certainly not a small outfit like a hagweon.

This also is harsh. The usual practice is to reimburse the employer for the trip to Korea if one doesn't last six months into the contract. The second six months of the contract is to earn the trip home. This paragraph states that you'll refund the employer if you don't make it through the whole year.

Not offered. Required by law.

Two lousy sick days a year and to get that, you need to give the boss a doctor's certification? That means no sick days.

Wrong. There is this nifty thing called the Labor Standards Act. This particular boss should look into that.

Good luck with him suing you in a court outside of Korea. But I'm glad he put that paragraph in there. I haven't read the funnies today.
By the way, OP, you may wish to ask a moderator to move this thread to the appropriate forum: contracts. |

So Dental and Pre-existing medical conditions are required to be covered by law?
I originally posted this up here to ask if anyone has heard of this recruiting company... but also wanted to post the contract up here since I already posted... |

No, and that's not what I intended. National Health Insurance coverage is required by law. This contract says the empoyer's going to offer it to you as though he's being magnanimous. |

Your salary is 2.1 mil/120 hours (one month's teaching hours). That's 17,500 an hour. Your overtime pay is 18,000/hour. That's less than 50 cents more per hour for overtime. It should be a MINIMUM of 20,000/hour, more like 25,000.

What about the domestic portions? Do you live in, say, Oklahoma and are going to Jeju? You have to pay to get yourself to an airport with flights to Seoul/ICN, and then from Seoul/ICN to Jeju. Typically, these trips are bought on one ticket. How is your employer even going to determine what's the fare share (despite this being an unfair agreement)?

Well, which one is it? I would only trust the government one.

As mentioned, 2 days is a small amount.
How on earth are you going to provide proof of illness before class? Even if you're able to get a doctor's appointment before class, you still have to go in to prove it? That's helpful |

| Thankfully I live 30 minutes from an International Airport, and I talked to the recruiter about them picking me up once I've landed in Korea. I'll take the government insurance because of all the good things I've heard about it. Thankfully, I'll be teaching from 2PM-9PM, so I should be able to have proof of illness if I do get sick. |

OP: I get a sense from your posts on this thread that you're a good guy with your eyes open.
Anticipate a good year. You'll love your students. You'll have some great adventures (tho maybe limited to long weekends). You'll make new friends.
Dont take the contract nitpickers too much to heart. They make their points but tend to dwell in conflict. Best advice I've got: befriend your boss, & care about the kids. Give & take.
You'll figure it out from there. |

OP: Best of luck. I hope you can develop a good working relationship with the boss (bring a present from home) so that he isn't as "to the contract" as he can be.
If not, feel free to bitch a moan here. It's a good way to vent. A lot of the time it's great stress relief! |

| Thanks for bringing that up! Should I bring gifts for all the teachers as well? Or just the director? I'm kind of lost as to how to present myself to them? |

I LOVE this!! the nutjob up north decides to strike, and before the teacher hits the pavement running, you must FIRST (1) go to your embassy (2) ask for paperwork (? what paperwork) (3) go back to your hakwon (4) cower down and ask for permission to RUN LIKE HELL!!!!

you signed that contract that's a whole year's gift right there.
as for presenting yourself - again - you signed that contract, you just presented yourself bottoms up, kneeling down, ready for anything else they'd like to shovel at you...
but hey, good luck, you're certainly going to need it |
