So my contract re-signing is coming up and I'm curious because they recently changed it so all teachers have to interview to resign. Also much of my school's staff changed in the past 3 months so I'm curious about the process since these new people barely no me.


I've known a few people turned down, but from what I've read, as long as your school doesn't hate you and you don't botch the open class, your in like flint.

I wouldn't worry if they don't "no" you. Your fellow CTs don't do the interviewing anyway.

I also found out that all of my students are filling out satisfaction questionnaires about my classes. Is that normal?

It's old news, but I wasn't re-signed by SMOE a few years back. Apparently, my head English teacher (and the other co-teachers) weren't impressed when I refused to sit with them in the teachers' office (after their beating students in front of me).

I guess refusing to teach with another male teacher for a week - when his classroom violence got completely out of control - didn't help my re-signing either.

Also, my planned lessons, based on TEFL methodology, didn't impress them either, as at my re-signing interview the smug SMOE supervisor told me: "We just want you for your voice."

In the end, they have to like you - and you have to like working with them. I wouldn't have thought your demo lesson, or your teaching practice had much to do with being re-signed, as at my 're-signing/firing' interview, all the women teachers were taken into a room and immediately re-signed (no questions asked). In contrast, all the older guys were taken into an interview room and 'interviewed' or canned.

I was told you only have to have an interview if you score below 70 in your evaluation by your co-teacher and your demo class ??

They wouldn't let me transfer, and they were probably going to make it so I couldn't renew...so I didn't renew (begin the renewal process rather) with the school and co-teacher I hated. 3 months from now I hope I'm working at a uni, since this is my 4th year here. Or I'll just give myself September off and start a really good hogwon or after school program in October. I'm pretty much done with public schools, after a bad experience with SMOE as well as GEPIK.

When I renewed in the Spring (open class in December) I heard it was 85%, but only 1-2 people in my district were interviewed. SMOE has now made it standard policy that you can't transfer. You have to renew where you are or be dropped.

I would say that your acceptance at school is the most important thing. If your demo plan is decent, no problems. I actually received some (useless) "critique" from the SETI reps observing me (because I teach in units, not individual lessons, and they saw 1 component). Long story short, my CT smiled and said I had nothing to worry about.

How long is the interview? What is the standard format/procedure for the re-newal interview?

My Open Class was today and my CT said I did alright. I definitely know my school likes me. I get along great with my co workers, and I bring in candy or small gifts for everyone on Western Holidays which they always get a kick out of and definitely appreciate.

I actually hope they let me re sign, as I absolutely LOVE my school. The situation I'm in right now is ace compared to what I had with EPIK in Busan.

All I know is everyone's scores will be submitted to SMOE heaquarters this Thursday, 10 June, 2010. I'm not sure when the interviews are held...

I've got an interview for renewal at the SMOE offices next week. I'm told that it's mandatory for all re-signing teachers.
