I ride it April 2nd. But it's slow from Daegu to Pusan because the tracks aren't finished. I hope they don't expect me to push.

I think there is a much bigger chance of disaster when the Gwangju subway opens. It's due to open any time. The mayor of gwangju was recently indicted for corruption. Apparently he took bookhanders from a construction company. The same company that was in part responsible for the Gwangju subway. The construction company circumvented the health and safety laws, and paid the mayor to "forget" about it. |

Not to be the Prophet of Paranoid Doom but after that little incident in Madrid, what are the odds that Al-Quaida might take a gander at this new bullet train, in light of the Korean Army's recent deployment to Iraq? |

not much...this is a pretty isolated country, and foreigners are noticed. |

Is it? I was there only last year and it looked FAR from being completed. Did they just end up slapping some metal together and calling it done or what? |

Yes, it is almost completed. If you look a certain areas of the city you can see the completed subway stations. They even have the "metro" signs up now. |

I'll be taking a trip on it in a couple of months.
The novelty will wear off soon though. |

thought the Gwangju subway was supposed to open March 12th (at least thats what I read before I moved) couldn't get it done huh?
I've heard those same stories about the bribes. It was first held up by somebody heading off with the money to Cambodia.
Also read it will bleed money for years as nobody is expected to use it. That it would have to cost 2500 won/trip to break even based on estimates of ridership
It runs out to Sangmu-jigu or close to the airport, won't be finished out to the airport until 2007.
Regarding the bullet train, did you see where they are going to cut Samaeul and Munghunwha trains on the routes by like 70%. Looks like they will force us to use it in order to get their money back.
BTW WTF does Korea need a bullet train? Its an absurd waste of money... |

That subway was supposed to be open in time for the World Cup. I remember getting stuck in horrible traffic jams downtown in a microvan with no aircond in the dead of summer, cursing that stupid subway as they methodically ripped up every road surface to make it. I thought to myself then (back in 97) "God help me if I'm still around to ride that damn thing!". Now, two years after it was supposed to be completed it is finally opening. And here I am back in Korea and will no doubt take a trip up to Gwangju to give it a try. God help me! |
