Hi all. I'm interested in doing the CELTA certificate next January to further a planned career in ESL teaching. I finished a Masters degree last September (not in ESL though, in international communications and relations) and plan to do a PhD in the next couple of years, with the long term goal of lecturing / teaching at university level.

In the meantime I want to start teaching English at uni level (not specifically aiming just at Korea mind you, even China / Japan / South America etc) and from research I know the CELTA course has a lot of weight.

My question is, is CELTA a step down from Masters level? Are there any other courses equal to a Masters (DELTA etc)? DELTA seems to be for experienced / qualified teachers only, although the level seems more akin to a Masters degree.

I'd be interested to hear from anyone else on this board who has / is thinking of going the same route as I am, or from anyone with advice on taking CELTA after doing a Masters (did it help with job applications / personal development etc)?

In order to get a delta or a trinity dip. You first need to do a celta or trinity cert. After two years of teching post certification you can do the next level. Since you have a masters it's not necessary to get a certification to get a uni job. But it would help you both in getting in a uni that takes teaching seriously and it would help you with the teaching itself regardless if you have or haven't taught before.

A fellow CELTA student already had her Masters and was glad she took the CELTA since she felt it taught her classroom and lesson planning skills she didn't get from her degree. Also, she was really receptive to the feedback from the tutors.
