For those of you mulling a big screen TV purchase, here is a rough guide.

1) Plasma - don't buy these for at least the next few years. Plasmas are notorious for being overpriced, burn-in danger (images can permanently burn into the screen if displayed too long, like a network logo or things on a video game) and deterioration of picture and brightness over time. Plus, expect your electricity bill to run in the hundreds of thousands of won if you watch it regularly.

2) LCD - these are a cheaper alternative to plasmas but I wouldn't get them either. LCDs often fail to produce true blacks and will suffer picture deterioration just like plasmas. Worst of all, you'll see the pixels on the screen while watching scenes of fast action.

3) DLP - this one so far is the safest bet among the three big screen options. Though prices in Korea are higher for these than in the US, this one doesn't not consume nearly as much power as plasmas, has a bright and good picture and if picture quality deteriorates after years of use, just replace the bulb and voila, it'll seem like you got a new TV. The only drawback is that you have to watch the screen from the proper angle, and isn't recommended if your living room suffers from excessive glare from windows.

Since I don't have the funds yet, I'm gonna probably buy a 32" CRT TV.

Have toyed with the idea of buying a DLP projector, but they are 2x as expensive here in Korea compared to back home. And in Korea, they seem anal about selling DVD Players with Digital outputs -- something you can EASILY get on even the cheapest budget players back home.

What do you mean by digital input, DVI? Actually, Samsung and LG make players here that do have those inputs, but the trick is to find a CRT TV that has the inputs, too.

One sales rep told me since Samsung is focusing more on the big screen market, LG CRT sets are better.

Daewoo Summus and Anam make 36" to 40" CRT sets, but I am wary of their quality.

I agree with the choice of a good old CRT. The plasma's and LCD's are great space-savers but their picture is not worth the asking price.

A 32" CRT can be had for very little money these days. Especially in Korea where the average consumer only wants to buy the latest thing.

As for brands....I've always noticed in appliance stores that the Panasonics' picture was particuarly good.

I'm assuming that when I see PDP it refers to plasma, correct? Is that why the prices are dropping, because people are burning their sets and getting furious about it? Surely there's some warning in the manual.

And I thought LCD was more expensive than PDP.

Doing some research, there seems to be a lot of misconceptions about PDP and LCD. Here's one interesting fact:

This is probably a useless post but I was at a friend's place the other day & his new 62-inch unit was damn impressive. No idea which technology but he's tech-savvy & he likely didnt spend his 5.5 mil too carelessly.

Me, I seldom watch tv.
