|
|
I called my parents this morning (to keep in touch and whatnot) and found out that the family dog suddenly died a couple days ago. He was only five, and he appeared to be quite healthy, but he just dropped dead while my parents were at work, apparently from a heart attack.
I've only been in Korea for just over a week, and I feel responsible for the dog's death. The dog was very bonded with me, so I feel my departure for Korea was too much for his little heart to handle. I know I shouldn't think that way and that the dog likely would've died even if I was there, but still. . .
I'm only posting about this here because I don't know who else to talk to, as I don't know many people here yet. I'm feeling pretty depressed right now.
Has anyone else here had to deal with the loss of a pet or person from back home while living in Korea or another far away country?

My dog died less than a month after I moved here. I'm sorry to hear about your loss. The roughest part was visiting home last month and not seeing his beds around the house, nor his toys scattered everywhere.
You may want to get a pet whilst here. Rodents live for 2 years on average. I got 2 male rats. One is frigging awesome and plays games with me and snuggles. The other's a jackass. When I do leave, I'll try to take them with me, no matter the cost. If it's not possible without ridiculous quarantine, I'll give them to my friend, who's already agreed to keep them if it comes down to it.
What was your dog like? Did it do any nifty tricks? |

I came here to warn you about looking for sympathy from Dave's. It seems you found it. Good job. |

Death is inevitable...everyone reacts differently...some wail for show and some wail because they mean it. Others are more emotional and some show no emotional....I take the approach...it's done, get over it and get on with my life or else it will make me a wreck. But I never forget.
I have had my dog for 14 years....got him before he was born! And I know I'll be deeply hurt when he passes....animals are better than people sometimes! |

I had a dog once. He didnt die. My parants sent him to a nice farm where he could run and play all day with the other doggies. |

The dog was a Corgi. He could do all the usual tricks, like "roll over" and "shake", but nothing fancy. He was a little rascal, but very loyal, he used to follow me all over the house. Being a herding breed, he loved to chase and be chased. He also loved car rides and walks and his squeaky toys. When he wanted someone to play with him he would often lie on his back to show off.
He was my best friend, and it will be hard for me to not see him when I eventually go back to the States.
At least my cat (who also lives with my parents in the States) is still very much alive and well so far. |

Sorry OP, I was absolutely crushed when we had to put my dog down. Five years ago on November 25th. I will never forget that day or the weeks of crying afterwards.
But, I know my dog had a great life. We were rarely separated and always playing in the woods behind my house. I rescued a dog here in Korea and send her home to live with my parents. They just love her and she brings a lot of smiles to everyone.
Cheer up, OP. It's not your fault! |

A bond one shares with its dog can be more closer than a bond with a human! so losing a friend, or loved one will hit you hard, but losing your best friend, your loved dog can hit you even harder. I know we have had animals my whole life and its really hard when their time comes. we are never ready for it..
put a picture of him up in your house and remember the great times you had with him. he sounds like a real loyal loving dog and I'm sure those 5 years you did share together were years you will cherish for ever..
It is very sad you can't share 10 more years with him but you can still remember him.. |

Nothing much to add, other than you have my sympathies. My dog was put to sleep a few weeks after I first came to Korea, although I was ready for the news because she had been ill with cancer for months. Still, it was hard when I got the call from my family. Likewise, when my Grandad died last year. It's one of the hardest parts about living abroad..... |

Yeah I feel for you, I love pets.
My dear old dog "chompy" died back in the summer of '57. Dear old creature. |
