I am looking at a position with an elementary school in Sanbon. I've been there and for me and it's a good location. Has what I need. But as I am just finishing up a Gepik year, I am struck by what seem like a lot of differences in Gunpo. For one my prospective school has English dramas that must be made on a weekly basis using blue screen. I am to make these during my free time, and oddly enough lunch time. I also would have to hit the English Cafe at the local youth Center every week. And the kicker for me is that during winter and summer camps I am expected to go away with the students for a five day four night trip. Just seems quite a bit different than what I've experienced in my current Gepik school. Also, doesn't every city receive its funding through the relevant city hall? I know I do now, but I still get a Gepik contract. In Gunpo you have a different contract.
So basically, how have things gone with those working at elementary schools on the Gunpo contract? Any similar expectations to the ones I've mentioned above? It seems like they have a lot of leeway in regards to where they can send you if they so desire. In practice does this happen very often? It also states in this overly worded contract that "work hours may be adjusted by employer as he/she deems appropriate." Vague phrases like that don't exactly warm the heart. |

You've answered your own post.
Stay away. Beware. It sounds like a lot of extra work (but are you paid extra?) |

Thanks for the response.
I am paid the overtime rate of 20 000 won for the English Cafe visits at the youth center. I would get an extra 200 000 won for those winter and summer 5 day field trips. But my wife is Thai and I know she won't like being left alone for 4 nights in Korea. As much time as she's spent here, it's not in her comfort zone.
It's largely the mysterious weekly English dramas and the separate Gunpo contract that raise warning signals. The contract seems to contain contigency plans for every possible event, seemingly cancelling out the concrete details. I will teach at school X, but that can be changed if they want. I work these hours, but if they want to change that they can. I will teach grades 5 & 6 but may teach these kinds of classes (adults, parents, teachers, teacher training, POE training) if required. It may be a bunch of possible scenarios that rarely happen, which is where I'm hoping some Gunpoers who have worked can clarify the situation. |

If you are working more than 28 hours per week you can refuse. Plus where is this English Cafe/youth center?
If it is NOT a public school you may be in violation of your visa. |
