|
|
I've got an ARC card, but I'm not too fond of the phone my new school wants to provide me. I'd like to get my own phone.
What is the best option? |

Here's what you do...
1.) Walk into an LG store
2.) Look at the phones
3.) Point to the one you want
4.) Hand over your ARC
5.) Sign a bunch of papers
6.) Walk out with your shiny new phone |

1.) I don't speak Korean.
2.) I've heard you need a co-signer (is that true?). |

You don't need a cosigner, at least for LG. Hand them your bankbook and they can set it up to deduct automatically.
There's so many stores, I'm sure you can find one that has an employee who speaks some English (at least if you're in a city). |

And will they sign me up for some 2 year contract, or is it monthly?
What plan do you have? |

I forgot about the bankbook. I knew I was forgetting a step, but it's been so long since I did it.
No, you don't have to have a co-signer with LG, that's why all foreigners should use their services. The only problem is they dont' have the best selection of top-line phones.
You only need a 2 year contract if you get a really nice phone and don't want to pay full price. YOu can get a simple phone for about 50-70k and it's no contract. The base price I believe is about 12k per month plus a bit for texting and calls. Incoming calls/texts are free, you only worry about what you do. |

This is kind of old advice. KT now has opened up for foreigners. They even have specific stores with english speaking staff on hand, and they will give E-2s iPhones now (there was an article in the paper about it 1-2 weeks ago) |

Is this only in Seoul?
Or has anybody anywhere else managed to get a phone deal without having a Korean on hand (and speaking no Korean)? |

IIRC the article posted here said that pretty much everyone with an E visa - except for E-2s - could now get an iPhone. Or did it change again?[/b] |

Ah right, but that was just about the iPhone, you can probably get other 1 year contract phones from them at their new international stores. |

Probably, trying searching korea times for iphone foreigners and any stories in the last 2-3 weeks. I'm sure there were stores around itaewon/yongsan mentioned. |

Here's something I've been meaning to ask...can anybody provide directions (from metro) to a specific cell phone store with fluent english-speaking staff? I was planning on going to Itaewon this weekend and heard there's some cell phone stores with english speaking staff but I'd much rather know where I'm going to check out beforehand rather than just walking into every cell phone place I see and asking if they speak english. |

No.
Korea doesn't use GSM or its 3G equivalent. They use the 3G that was the upgrade path from CDMA. The only phones with SIMS are used for international roaming and the sim doesn't get used in Korea. |
