So everyone understands not to drink water from the tap here (I didn't before I arrived actually), but what exactly is the reason? I've heard explanations from Koreans such as: the pipes in old buildings are rusted, there is bacteria in the water, and there are chemicals in the water. I've heard many times that after boiling the water it is ok to drink it, which would eliminate the chemical explanation since you can't boil away toxins.
Which of these are true? Or is it something else? I suppose it could be a combination possibly. I just wish I had some sort of reliable info on this because I pretty curious. |

The Seoul buses say you can drink Seoul water. Therefore I do. |

I would say that it's not that it's dangerous, It is just super high in minerals and chemicals to kill bacteria; like any city water anywhere in the world. I drank it a little when I first got here and had no adverse effects, but it tastes terrible, kind of like dirt. It turns my shower floor orange as well;. I don't really want to drink something that does that.
I'm sure there are other reasons, but I would say that the fact that Koreans don't drink it, don't. |

I usually keep bottled water in the fridge, but I cook with tap water. And if I run out of bottled water, I don't mind drinking from the tap, either. If it wasn't safe to drink, that would be immediately clear to anyone. If there is any real reason not to drink it, I would like to hear it, too. |

I bought one of the pitchers at Costco with the filters. I use it not only for drinking, but cooking, making ice cubes, and even give it to my cats. |

That's a good idea.
The thing for me about it is all the friggin water bottles I end up with. Total pain to put in the trash. I don't live anywhere near a recycling bin, and even if I did I wouldn't be interested in hauling them to it on a weekly basis. My apartment is in a small building, not a tall tower like some people have where you can just throw it down a shoot. Then I have to make the decision to either save them up and use less trash bags, or throw them out with the rest of my trash, not fully utilizing the EXPENSIVE trash bags. I usually just let them build up until it's too crazy to bear and take out a huge load to the curb. No idea if it angers my neighbors, but I haven't heard any complaints. If anyone has any suggestions or input on the water bottle situation I'd love to hear them. |

My water has been tested, it was fine.
I usually use a brita, but not for my ice or cooking.
If you do live in an old building though you should check it just to make sure there aren't issues with the pipes. |

Do you have to put recycleables in a bin in Seoul? In Daegu we just put them in a separate bag (not an official "garbage" bag) and set them out with the trash. |

My friend had been drinking tap water for the whole year he was here, said it tasted fine (from alabama though so who knows what his opinion means) |
