Here's my issue:

I originally told my school I wanted off from 7/21 (When the semester ends) to 8/21 (3 days before it starts). They said that it was no problem. My wife asked for the same at her school and they okay-'ed it also.

We both had 2 weeks of standard vacation left and we'll be getting the 2 weeks of 'home leave' for resigning the contract.

Now my school is saying that they want me to do Summer Camp from 7/21-7/30 and be back on 8/21. Not a big deal, but a pain in the butt AND it leaves me with un-used vacation days.

My question: The contract says that I may be ASKED to do 20 hours of camp a week. Does this mean I HAVE to do camp? What're my rights here?

Regarding the 2-week-resigning vacation bonus, this is always kind of controversial. My understanding- via a GEPIK rep- was that this 2 weeks CAN be taken AS THE SEMESTER BEGINS, i.e., you'd end up missing the first week or 2 weeks of the semester. I'd rather not do that. But is that correct? My counter-proposal to my school would then be to return on 8/28 instead of 8/21.

I understand they need someone to teach camp and whatever, but I've put in any number of insane hours doing goofy side-projects for them and I'm standing my ground on this one. I just wanna know what my rights are here.

1) if you got it in writing then you are fine, tell them no, you guys had an agreement and it shuld be honored.

2) Even if you dont have it in writing tell them that you guys came to an greement and you and your wife made your plans togther, bought tickets etc.

3) It does not leave you with unused vacation days. You will use all of your vacation days, and then you will use half of the resiginging bonus 2 weeks which you can offset to the winter term.

All in all its a pain in the butt, but unles you have it in writing you have very little recourse,

My experience with Korean public schools: The more you do, the more they expect. The more they say 'Yes', the more you should expect ''No' (later). Sad, but true in my experience.

Good luck with your hols. Keep us posted.

If it's convenient and possible for you, move the dates back as a favour to your school. If not, or if changing your tickets and such is expensive, keep your dates.

They already okayed the dates so it's too late now. Verbal is good enough.
