|
|
I've had it in my hand about the idea of using newspapers in a class for about a month now. Despite my best efforts I've been unable to come up with a good idea that makes logical sense.
So, I throw the idea out onto the board to see what people can come up with. Anyone have a good idea that involves newspapers? Please share it. |

Select one article from a newspaper (perhaps a funny story). Choose ten words that would give an idea for students to guess the story. Write the ten words on the board, give students a minute to memorise the words. Wipe them off the board and then get students to write them on the board. After that, get students to work in pairs and guess the story. Get students to compare stories and then give the article to them. Provide some comprehension questions and your good for a solid hour. |

Use Dear Abby with high level students or Adults. Make some comprehension questions and some discussion questions. Bingo instant lesson.
Separate headlines from articles. Students in groups match them. |

Newspapers are great for emphasizing the importance of pre-reading activities - headlines, photos, captions, skimming, etc. - before (or even instead of) reading. |

Great ideas but I was considering using them for lower level activities. Mainly from cutting and pasting letters and words. |

One thing you could do is for students to choose their best sentence in the newspaper article. Give pieces of paper to each student and let them write the sentence with one word on each piece of paper. The students then move and they have to re-arrange the pieces of paper to make the sentence. Easy and minimal cutting required. |

I have yet to successfully implement newspapers into my classes as well, my students level is too low.
However, http://www.newsademic.com/ is a great resource. You can sign up to get the cover story emailed to you for free every Friday and it comes with a worksheet and crossword or some other kind of puzzle to check reading comprehension.
Good luck! |

cut them in strips about 1-2 in wide, 12 in long, dip in wheat paste (flour and water) and cover round air-filled balloons. put in a window sill to dry, paint as "heads" faces, etc.
