Wow...I've been gone for only about 2 years and now I look at the job postings and their trying to make teachers work like 40 hrs or in some cases 45 hrs a week I see. What's happening here?

I spent nearly ten years in Korea and I recall the standard being 30 hrs a week.

All of the jobs I've been responding to have a 30 teaching-hour work week, with about 40hrs total per week. I would just glance over those with any more than that... probably just looking to net in people who don't know any better.

competition in Seoul led directors and principals to rein in on the market and exploit teachers as much as possible.

also limits the after-hours tutoring that so many seek for extra income

Yup. Overall, Korea is going downhill for teachers.

Too many teachers are coming here. They will work you to the bone during those 40-50 hrs per week.

Gee, couldnt have anythig to do with the world economy could it?

And the fact that to MANY people ANY paycheck is a good one.

I know far too many American's and Canadians who can't get employment so Kra is a nice place to come.

Schools here don'thave to offer you the moon any more to get you here, and offering you a fairly easy 40 hour work week is not exactly "going downhill" as another poster put it.

You could alwasy go to Thailand and work the same hours for a fifth of the pay, or you could go to Japan and make a comparable wage and pay much more for your living costs.

I support a wife and a child, work for SMOE and stil save 2 milion a month for 22 hours. I don't call this "downhill" personally

I appreciate this bit of info. I had invested a lot of time and energy into my career in Korea. I know it means a lot to get a job right off the bat like this in Korea though for first timers. It's a special place for me too. Though, i have put in a lot of hours and am little bit fussy.

I was basically only curious to know what the current standards were. I had thought previously 30 hrs/week was like the law or something 'cause I had never heard of anything more than that.

30 hours could mean 30 clock hours or it could mean 30 classes. 22 is standard for public school which is usually 22 classes a week, but I hear 30 hours is going to be in the some contracts starting this Fall. It's known that Chungnam province Cepik will start doing this in it's contracts offering a paltry 2.2 million won a month. Does this mean, "adios, amigo" to extra class pay? This wouldn't effect those who contracted for 22 hours a week until next February who started last March?

Anyone seeing contracts with more than 30 teaching hours a week written in them? If so, how much is the pay?

Another point: Koreans are having less children hence less children too teach.

exploitation.. as long as people take these jobs the conditions will keep getting worse! soon as china steps up their salaries to around 2000-2200 a month with housing..
then maybe you will see the conditions get better.. until then, its exploitation as usual! ive seen some schools still offering 1.9! hahahahaha

people probably take that ....can you believe that.. still cant blame them they are probably coming from the boonies back home where they were pumping gas for 3 bucks a hour.. so 1900 dollars a month with housing is xmas for them..
