hey kids, i just left a non-contract job in andong.

i left because i was getting paid. odd as that may sound, i was getting paid because the director there wanted me to sign a contract, he was buttering me up. after reading the following thread and talking to two other former employees of REI andong, i decided that signing a contract with this guy was somewhat akin to saying "yes, please swindle me, even though i'm 5 zillion miles from home and can't do anything about it"

http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/korea/viewtopic.php?t=14730&highlight=andong

pretty much everything that happened to this guy, save the highly questionable accusation of child molestation happened to me. if you work for REI andong, you will be the only english teacher in korea living with your director, his wife and his annoying brat.

also, i realized that the only reason the guy had the means to pay me in full was that he was afraid i would bail. that the four korean teachers and other foreign teacher (under contract) were not getting paid... call me a commie, but it's embarrassing to have 2 million won in your pocket when your coworkers go home crying because they're korean and can't stand up to the punk who isn't paying them, especially when they do the lion's share of the work.

no i didn't go out whoremastering with my director, though it is his favorite pastime...

however i did go to jim-jil-bang with him and i had to wonder why everything in this country ends in "dong" since there's nary a dong in this country.

Dude, you did the right thing.

I just wish that if anyone else is looking for work in Andong, they read this post first.

The boss of this school is really a schister in a very big way.

He told me "I called immigration and you can never come to Korea again! Interpol is looking for you!"

This is funny. When I asked Interpol, they had no such information. Same at immigration.

I have been to Korea twice since the incident. Immigration did or said nothing.

The guy is full of brown stuff.

Good luck dude.

Just as an add-on, the school is actively (desperately) looking for a new teacher.

Rumour has it they may also be changing their name. Remember: when looking for a job in Korea, ALWAYS ask for references from past / current teachers.

I have been posting here for a few years now, so most of you are familiar with me.

What is being said is largely true.

I demanded my boss pay my full wages and get me the apartment he had promised me for several months. The guy owed me over 6 million won in back pay, etc. and I have not seen one nickel of it since I walked.

When I told him I would quit if he didn't fullfill his contractual obligations, the next day he accused me of mollesting a student so I had better stop pushing him or he cannot "protect me".

Of course, the student was the boss' best friend's daughter. And of course he did not call the police on me. And of course, the other students in that class were not allowed to be questioned. And of course, everything would all "go away in time" if I just stopped asking for my pay and apartment as promised.

Now it seems the previous poster has been accused of hitting a student. Again, why was the police not called?

Because it never happened.

Now the new teacher is going to be screwed over in the worst way simply because the boss can't get a visa for him.

Previous teachers had been screwed over pretty badly too.

One had his pay stolen from the place he hides his money. A place where only the boss knew where it was.

Another Canadian teacher accused the boss of being less than honest, and was immediately fired (after 11 months and 2 weeks into his contract, hence no 2 million bonus and no last month's pay).

R.E.I. in Andong.

Avoid. Boycott.

Work there at your own risk.
