If any of you are living here and not working, I'd like to know about it.

Like, if your husband/wife works and you don't, if you're raising kids at home instead, for example. Is there a different visa for you? Are you allowed to live here?

Yeah!

Look into an F3 spousal visa.

I work on an E2 visa and my husband and son are on F3 visas. My husband volunteers. He has tried to find paid work (an employer will have to sponsor a working visa for him if he could find a job) but after about 7-8 months of looking he just gave up and started volunteering to pass the time.

What do you want to know about being a dependant? If you ask some more specific questions I could probably shed some light on things for you.

Oh, nothing specific. I just wanted to know if it was possible, or anything else that I should generally be warned about.

Actually, I would like some details too on some hoops you had to go through as well as some info on it. I'll be going on an F3 spousal visa in a few months once my contract ends. (baby on the way).

How long does the process usually take?

Assuming you are on an E2 AND your husband is also an E1/2/7 then IF you have proof of marriage and his paperwork (certificate of employment, ARC, passport) you can change your status to F3 in about 30 minutes.

Collect paperwork
go to immigration
fill in application form
pay fee (get stamps)
submit to counter
wait for a while, while they process it and make you a new ARC
leave.

We just did it for my husband. We had to leave his passport and our marriage cert there. I'm assuming they'll send us back the marriage cert with his passport and new ARC.

IF they don't realize that your certificate was an original (they think it was a copy or certified copy) they will keep it.

My husband is here on an F-3 visa. He's not working... other than being a good house-hubby! Laughing He's not the type to get bored easily, so it's all good. Getting his F-3 visa was relatively painless, as well.

Did he have to give up his passport and your marriage certificate?

I told the immi office that our marriage cert was our only original and they just made copies of them for me. They kept my hubby's and son's passports in any case, just as they did mine when I was getting my ARC, because they have to put the visa stamp in the passport AND issue the ARC. You get the passport back when you get your ARC.

At least, that's how it happened with my family

It's "original", green paper, lots of stamps, signatures and fingerprints on it. That being said, I have 5 other like it at home. Still, I'd rather not lose one if I don't have to since I can't get them by mail and have to have someon physically go to the town where we were married to get one.

Darn, guess I should have said it was the only one we had. Fingers crossed, he'll get everything back in two weeks. If not, then in December, he'll have to get more marriage certs.

We had to give a copy of our marriage certificate, and yes, then his passport. It now has a visa stamp in it, and he has his ARC, with the F-3 visa status.

Darn, I don't know why they took our marriage cert. Maybe because the translation was stapled to it. Either way, I hope they return it.
