I'm trying to debate weather I should stay a few days to breath down their neck to make sure my severance and airfare gets posted, if if I should go ahead and leave, giving them my American bank account number to wire it all to. It's like 3.6 mil so it's no small potatoes to me and I'm nervous it'll get lost in the ether with the way things get administered here. I'm also not going directly home, but rather blowing my savings backpacking for a few months, and that money is factored into the late game costs of all that. Thoughts? Questions? Comments? Complaints?

I have always gotten my severance and airfare on my last paycheck and wouldn't suggest leaving the country without it.
Pension is different because it gets sent afterwards to make sure the last payment is made but you should be getting your airfare and severance on your last pay day before you peace out.

Pension comes from the government AFTER you leave and WILL be sent to your account in your home country (if you qualify for a refund).

Severance and airfare come from the school and I wouldn't leave without it because after you are gone there is no means of ensuring you get it from abroad and they are not likely to forward it to your foreign bank account.

sidenote: I have ALWAYS been paid my airfare and severance along with my final pay on my last day of work.

I'm going through that now at my school as well.

My coteacher said they'd give me the money here in won before I leave, and I can change it to dollars and just take a bunch of Benjamins home with me (yeah, yeah, wire it, but I have my reasons). She said the rules say to wire it to make sure the person gets on the plane, but they trust me. (I guess because you could book a 1.3 mil flight to New York, get your money back, cancel the flight, and then take a 200,000 won flight to Manila instead).

The pension office said they'd send me my refund about a month after I'm home. I have no problems with that though, since it's the main government office and I'm sure they're honest about it.
