i'm working at a university and we've just been told that we will have to do an annual health check. i'm not sure what this entails.

i was wondering if anyone knew if i must do this (in regards to the korean govt and my visa) or if it's just something they encourage us to do?

any info? thanks...

I don't have a definitive answer to that, but I do know that I have to do one every year for the POE. It is just the standard check that Koreans do.

My middle school is also doing this for all of the teachers this week. I just had my SMOE renewal health check completed so I don't need the one all the other K-teachers are getting. My coteacher said it's less invasive than the visa health check, i.e. sans AIDS or drug testing. Actually, it sounds like they're just making all of the teachers get a physical.

I'm pretty sure if everyone at your uni is doing it, it's not a visa issue but probably something everyone does for the sake of someone having more paperwork to do, and thus appearing busier.

This is also probably one of those times where it's easier to just go along with it then fight it. It's not like medical privacy exists here.

All the K teachers (at my public/private school ) got a medical check up last year. I was told it was compulsory, and that it's free because of our compulsory Health Insurance.

I politely refused, as I'd had 2 very thorough checks for my visa. My co-teacher was concerned that I might have stomach cancer, as that's why the Korean teachers get these tests. I told her I don't smoke, drink, or eat pickled vegs, so there's little chance of me getting stomach cancer. Surprisingly, she got it.
