Does anyone know if I am permitted to import my Vette from home as an F-2 visa holder?

BTW, just finished my latest street racer a month ago. Have a look.

Just love the way their mouths drop open and they jump back as my turbo barks loudly through 2nd and 3rd:)

Doesn't matter your visa status. You just have to be prepared to pay duties, road and gas guzzler tax.

you're obviously not working a typical teaching job or if you are working as a teacher you must be bringing in some serious coin to spend money like that - but each to their own.

I'm personally not a car person - that is spending money on what you spent. But just wondering a couple of things. When do you get a chance to really use the power of that thing? And did you do anything extra to the body, I mean reinforcement of the chassi (spl?)? The standard frames of cars like that are not designed to take that kind of consistant power. But if you have good for you. Enjoy.

Yes, I am financially well-off from a number of good investments over the years, thank God. And no, I really prefer to avoid the pub/bar ESL teacher scene...just not my thing. Bodybuilding and racing get the attention I have left over after my 2 sons and wife.

There is a whole racing sub-culture here that most foreigners never get to see, much less be a part of. These are good people who do most of their modifications "tuning" by themselves and have a love for horsepower, speed and andrenalin.

Here is a similar Tuscani Turbo to mine eating a Lamborghini for supper.

mostly in Seoul or other areas? I've seen a *few* tastefully modded cars around but they have been jewels in the dirt so far!

To each his/her own....but I will never in a million years understand the fascination with this stuff.

To the OP, that's funny that you started this thread as an excuse to show off your car and brag about your money, when surely there are far better resources available on the internet to learn about importing cars into Korea than an English teaching forum. It's almost as if you're the sort of bloke to spend exorbitant quantities of money on a car and spend all his time body building....hold on a tick.

Is the OP planning on driving the thing regularly?

Thing to note:

Back home, I never had a car accident.

Two years in Korea: Two car accidents (one my fault, one the others), and two significant dings (both my wife and my fault). Car also gets scratched up quite a bit owing to tight parking.

Moral of the story: I would not drive a fancy import car in Korea, unless money is no object.

You have got to me the most narrow-minded person posting right now. Just because other people want to buy jewelry, GPS units, sunglasses or cars, you get your panties in a bunch and feel compelled to make snide comments about other people. Maybe if you actually spent some money instead of being such a cheapskate, you wouldn't be such a miserable git.

To the OP, ignore this fool. I would like to learn what you find out about how much it costs to bring over a vette. I've only ever seen one in Korea before - in Itaewon driven by some military-looking guys. It would be great to see more good-looking cars in Korea. BTW, what kind of Corvette do you have? My friend has a C6 Z06 and I went for a ride in it. Man, that thing is scary fast.

It's funny that with all the replies, no one actually answered your questions.

It doesn't matter about visa when it comes to importing. They are happy to charge taxes to everyone equally.

Taxes:

10% Duty
10% excise tax
10% VAT (which is 10% of car value, freight, insurance + duties) Yes. They tax you on the taxes.

The total amount will be close to 35% of Blue Book for your car. Freight and insurance is added to the value of the car for tax purposes as well as adjustments for the exchange rate, which currently hurts.

According to Korea Customs you'll also have to contact:
You may import vehicles as household goods, but should have them registered after going through a number of certification procedures. Regarding the procedures, you are recommended to contact the following agencies:
▶ Self-certification: Motor Vehicles Management Team, Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs(02-2110-8701~3), Korea Transportation Safety Authority Automobile Testing & Research Institute(http://www.ts2020.kr, 031-369-0274~5)
▶ Emissions and noise certification: Environmental Transportation Division, Ministry of Environment (02-2110-6806~9, 6799), Transportation Pollution Research Center, National Institute of Environmental Research (http://tprc.nier.go.kr, 032-560-7654~7)

My snide comment in relation to this post is more related to the fact that he was clearly looking for an excuse to post photos of his car and boast about his income. Clearly the OP is an intelligent guy, otherwise he wouldn't be wealthy, so surely he would be able to find the answer to his question via regular old research and not by asking a random spattering of teachers, 99% of whom will neither own a Corvette nor import a sports car into Korea. Undoubtedly you are flying in to defend him as you yourself often find excuses to bring up your successful business and how much money you're making.

I presume from previous posts of yours that you are a pretty materialistic and shallow person, but I'm sorry, no matter how much money you're making, buying expensive jewelry will always be a waste of money and is nothing more than an excuse to flaunt one's wealth. Similarly, $400 is too much to spend on a single pair of sunglasses. A GPS unit would be convenient, but certainly isn't necessary.

Don't worry Madoka, I spend plenty of money and like to have nice things, but we're saving up at the moment to start our own business and I'd rather live frugally now in order to meet our goals and get out of Korea sooner.

Awesome ride! I am sure you can import your baby. How long did it take to mod it?

Got it!

This doesn't change the fact that some purchases are wasteful regardless of your income level.

I understand that's your opinion but when you put people down based on their purchases, it makes you look like a jealous douche.
