|

Hello,
I'm currently completing a 140 hour TEFL Cert with i-to-i, with the intention of going to teach English in South Korea for 6 months from February to August 2011. I have looked through available jobs in South Korea and have noticed that most contracts seem to be a year long. Is there any possibility of getting 6 month contracts, or is this totally out of the question? I have heard that you risk not gaining some important benefits if you don't go for the full year. E.g. - flight reimbursement.
I have heard about the TALK programme in Korea, which works as both a programme for teaching English and a cultural programme. I know that you only do 15 hours teaching a week and there is a lot of free time to explore South Korea with your fellow TALK scholars. If I got accepted for this programme is it worth doing? Has anybody got any experience of this programme and have any positive or negative comments to post about the programme? I am not eligible for the EPIK programme as I only have 6 months to give.
If South Korea works out, I am considering teaching English inChina for 6 months, which seems to be easier to arrange (i-to-i can arrange this placement for me) If I got accepted for the TALK programme would it be more beneficial to accept that or to go and teach English in China instead?
Any information would be greatly appreciated,
Aoife Sadlier. |

There are no 6-month contracts in Korea. At least none that I have ever heard about. Nearest would be something like doing two camps in a row.
How do you pronounce that btw? Does it sound like "Eve"? |

| Do you know anything about the TALK programme though? My name sounds similar to Eva, except with an f instead of a v, so the closest is: 'Efa.' It's an old Irish name. |

If you go with TALK you get approx. 1.5million won (roughly $1500 give or take) compared to 2.0 million won and over if you go with other places. I think that's the only MAJOR difference. I think you have to apply during certain times as well.
You can get a 6 month contract.

| You CAN do 6 month contracts. You have to negotiate it with the schools. You won't get many of the standard benefits though. (e.g. airfare, severance, maybe no accommodation). |
