Hi--

My husband is supposed to be teaching Poli-Sci in Korea in August. He has been in contact with the Uni for a while now and one reason the Uni wants to hire him is because he would help facilitate a study abroad program between his current Uni and the Uni in Korea, and would help the 2 Unis with a partnership.

The Uni in Korea contacted my husband a month ago with a monetary figure. The full contract was supposed to arrive soon after. It would include the details.
After 3 weeks of not hearing from them, he contacted the Uni to see what
was happening. They replied that we will hear from them this week.
It's now midnight there and still nothing. Somewhere in between, the president of the University in the US (where my husband is getting his Phd) was asked to visit the Uni in Korea, but did not. We are not sure why, but the excuse was that he would not be in Asia for the summer and had other plans. I suspect that this has something to do with the fact that they are not getting back to my husband.

I have read that in the Korean culture, things can be done indirectly.
Like firing someone. A boss would not tell you straight on but would
do "things" to make you understand that you need to leave.

We were supposed to leave for Korea in 1 month. We still don't have a
contract, dates.... nothing.

My question to you is: Is it common for Universities to wait until the last minute to give a contract and details of the contract? We have a 15 months old, are supposed to leave our house on 07/31, and now, we still don't have the contract. And of course, no backup job.

Thank you for letting me know your thoughts,
-e

could be that the university "lost face" because of the non-visit... also, in my experience, koreans wait til the last minute to do anything and then rush about to get it done...

good luck!

Keep your options open by exploring other options is all I can say. Get on the horn now if you want to start in a month or two.

No Contract means no work visa.

Coming to Korea without the E1 visa means more problems than you need to even consider (so don't do it).

It sounds like the job has not yet been finalized (as in their plan to have it happen fell apart) because of or perhaps in spite of the non-visit by your Uni president. If this is the case, the job may not materialize. IT is also unusual for a new course to be brought in mid term (term starts in March).

Lots of things don't sound right (for many reasons) in your description so it would be wise to be wary and Personally, I would be looking for another position for the "gap" time.

actually, this is very typical and not at all unusual. there could be all kinds of reasons for the delay, not the least of which the whole deal fell apart for whatever reasons (may or may not have anything to do with your end) and quite frankly, no one at the K university is really going to be overly concerned with your needs. that's just the way it is.

what to do? since it's your husband looking for a position and there's a small child involved, I'd say let your husband secure a position FIRST then send for you and your child LATER so you all aren't left up the creek w/o the proverbial paddle.

hope you can re-claim your living arrangements because if this position falls thru it might be (or might not, if he's lucky) difficult to find another spot quickly.

another tip - uni spots in K often go to people in-country as they like to interview prospects in person. that's not to say you should come over, do not, like Tom said, that could be a disaster - just that again, it might take longer to happen is all.

good luck!

Thanks, all--

My husband's prof here in the US is Korean and he is the one who had the job created via the President of the K school. That's why it would start in Aug.

Things don't look promising either way. And our prof is not reachable for 2 weeks.

I am afraid that if for some reason they still offer the job, there may be some kind of conflicts in the department.

Thank you all,
