http://edition.cnn.com/2010/BUSINESS/06/29/china.rent.white.people/index.html?hpt=C1

Quote:

Beijing, China (CNN) -- In China, white people can be rented.
For a day, a weekend, a week, up to even a month or two, Chinese companies are willing to pay high prices for fair-faced foreigners to join them as fake employees or business partners.
Some call it "White Guy Window Dressing." To others, it's known as the "White Guy in a Tie" events, "The Token White Guy Gig," or, simply, a "Face Job."
And it is, essentially, all about the age-old Chinese concept of face. To have a few foreigners hanging around means a company has prestige, money and the increasingly crucial connections -- real or not -- to businesses abroad.
"Face, we say in China, is more important than life itself," said Zhang Haihua, author of "Think Like Chinese." "Because Western countries are so developed, people think they are more well off, so people think that if a company can hire foreigners, it must have a lot of money and have very important connections overseas. So when they really want to impress someone, they may roll out a foreigner."
Or rent one.
Last year, Jonathan Zatkin, an American actor who lives in Beijing, posed as the vice president of an Italian jewelry company that had, allegedly, been in a partnership with a Chinese jewelry chain for a decade.

Wow-
Thought China was a world leader. Guess they need- or "want" a white face just to be accepted amongst themselves Idea

This isnt as common as it once was. I used to get taken out to dinner ,invited to meetings to show that the boss knew white people. It gave them status. A famous chinese wine company has a white guy on its advertising, know the guy ,he works in their office. He does nothing except drink play golf with the bosses. Heis quite content and knows his place. They trot himout when important business visitors come by! The pet white boy!

When I worked in Singapore my company always put me and the other two foreigners on all the brochures and websites. We usually were the ones to give tours to potential clients. Unfortunately we had to work just as hard as everyone else though.

Isn't that the same as Korean hagwons who hire unqualified 'teachers' just to have white faces around?

No, it's not the same as teaching. What would it be to fly on a business jet with the big boss and go out to a 5 star hotel and dinner? And then hit 9 holes on a world class golf course. And be slid $10,000 a month as an allowance? How about working the corner office? I'll bow to a 90 degree angle regularly and kiss butt for this sweet gig that seems to be a pie in the sky figment of my imagination. When I was young man fresh out of school, I just expected opportunities later on to be fat like this. Just because I had a brain and destined for a prestigious degree, I thought I'd wear suits, talk business, crunch numbers, hit golf, and fly on fancy jets to stay in ornate marble hotels. It seem that by 40 years old, we could do the almost unthinkable. Be rich and fly to the moon. We couldn't have been more mistaken by believing such lofty dreams. Well, the baby boomers fed me full of optimism when I was young, because to them, the sky seemed like the limit if you were privileged enough to be starting your career at the dawn of the 21st century, a time they envisioned would be magnificently fruitful and golden.

I was that guy as well for about 1 year. I only really needed to participate or show my face at business dinners, conferences and meetings. It was an investment/development company and I can honestly say I did nothing of worth during my 1 year stay. I just chose to practice CHinese and I did some English teaching on the side.

Pros: Pay wasn't bad for doing nothing. I got 8000 RMB a month and a 3BDR apartment all to myself.

Cons: I was required to be in the office from 9-7 with little or nothing to do. I also had to get hammered drunk at least 2 times a week with My managers and their cronies. I was also in the middle of nowhere ( A developing city) and it was frowned upon if I took off on the weekend to go party with younger people in Qingdao.

All the while you still get to carry on about being an 'oppressed minority' here in Asia...

I doubt you even looked at the video in the link. The westerners there act real smug- maybe that's the type of westerner you admire: the guys that do nothing and provide no service other than to give a firm fraudulent status. Wink
