The following is a account how a message of environmental awareness became a promotion of Jeju as world heritage site. Here is the response to the Joongang Ilbo:
Quote: |
We ask that you print an apology with a complete correction and would prefer a separate article be written telling the truth about the project. We would also request that the reporter involved be disciplined and that you explain to him the difference between journalism and fiction. |
Sherrin Hubbard is going to swim 200km around Jeju island to raise awareness for the environment as a part of the "World Environment and Peace Summer School". This is dubbed "The Jeju Big Swim"
The Joongang Daily ran the article . Unfortunately, the reporter completely fabricated some quotes and told an entirely different story.
Here are some gems:
1) The headline "Swimming and Kayaking around Jeju....We will spread the beauty of Jeju to the world" is absolute nonsense. The purpose of The Jeju Big Swim is an educational project to raise environmental awareness on Jeju.
The first quote is a complete fabrication. We did NOT say "How often can we see such a beautiful place? I want to let the world know about Jeju". What we actually said was Jeju is such a beautiful place with huge potential. But it is being spoiled. We want to let people know that there are many things they can do to make Jeju a cleaner, greener environment.
2) During the swim we will not write their daily log on and post picture on their blog and let the netizens all around the world know about the scenery of Jejudo. We will let netizens around the world know that the environment is under threat, but there are many things that they can do to save it.
3) The next quote that refers to the purpose of The Jeju Big Swim: "Let's start an event to promote the value of Jeju as World Natural Heritage Site" is a complete fabrication and was never said. The Jeju Big Swim has nothing to do with promoting the value of Jeju as a World Natural Heritage site. I asked Steve if he would like to sea kayak with me as part of an educational campaign to raise awareness about the sad state of our environment.
4) The final quote in the article is said to be by team member Hyun Song Mi "This is something that had to be done to promote my hometown Jeju". This is another complete fabrication. What Sung Mi actually said was This is something that had to be done to promote environmental education and awareness in my hometown of Jeju.

I'm a J-student currently. If I tossed quotes in my articles like that I would get a black mark on my record, if I didn't outright fail the class. Taking exact quotes isn't always easy, as my professors themselves have admitted sometimes they would or have 'cleaned up' quotes by taking out hums and haaa's or other verbal stumbles, but the informational content of a quote should not be altered, as should the context by which the quote was spoken.
Stuff like this is why newspapers more and more are losing credibility. There are other reasons of course but this is a good example of one of the many reasons. >_< |

Korean govt and their puppet media are desperate to present a "green" image to the world.
The reality is somewhat different though. Part of Jeju's oldest and most ecologically rich forest is being cleared for a golf course, and other natural areas levelled to build their new naval base. |
