I have a quick question for you people. Is it possible to download and play games on PS3 similar to the Wii?

On the Wii you may go to the Wii Chanel and purchase old classics like Super Mario Brothers 3 and Boogerman: A Pick and Flick Adventure and play them on the Wii.

Does the Playstation Network offer anything like this? I'm not looking for emulators or modded consoles. I rather not buy a playstation 2, since I'm looking to save space, money and time.

I'm thinking it would be a great idea since Wii is obviously making cash on nostalgia and people re-buying classics from their childhood.

I would love to play the old God of Wars and Shadow of the Colossus without having to buy the system and games and just be able to download them on the PS3.

You can download old Playstation ONE games, but not Playstation 2 games. In the case of God of War, you can get God of War 1 and 2 on a single disc for Playstation 3 (and it looks better on an HD tv than it otherwise would too). Not really what you wanted, but it's something, and there are some good PS1 classics on PSN.

Yeah, unfortunately it looks like Sony is going to make us repay for all our favorite PS2 classics in the form of "HD updated" titles. First it was the GoW collection. Now, there's the Sly Cooper games. Next, at least I think, is Ico and Shadow of Colossus (which I am most excited about). Instead of giving us backwards compatibility again via an fw update, good old Sony's gonna make us spend money on games many of us already bought *sigh*

You think it would be easier for them to have an update and just download them (for a fee of course) then have us buy discs. That way people would buy both God of War and God of War 2 instead of the bundle pack at probably a cheaper price.

Maybe in the future.

It would be easier for everyone involved, and probably more profitable for Sony in the long run, but these guys don't understand their own market.
