I don't think they do, I think I got hit with some face saving spite.

I went to buy four asahis because they are on sale along with some other imported beer for the world cup. 20% off.

The cashier didn't ring my discount so I pointed out the sign to her. She then indicated I had to get four different beers (I don't think it's true, as I've used this deal a few times). So I got one asahi and 3 others.

Then she applied the correct discount, asked if I wanted a bag, and said it would be 20 won. I just rolled my eyes and said OK.

Total, 9,420. I put down 10,500. She said she didn't want the 500 and asked for 100 won instead. I laughed and gave her 100 won and she gave me 680 won in change....not sure what that accomplished other than giving her a sense of empowerment bossing Mr. Foreigner around.

anyway, are plastic bags 20 won at 7-11 now? Or is there a certain fat girl who's bad at adding/subtracting and who I'm going to have to make smartass remarks to every time I get beer?

You should definitely tell her that she "should lose her weight."

By law (I think it started a year or two ago) every convenience store and mart is supposed to charge for the bag. I remember when the law went into effect it seemed like everyplace was doing it, but these days it seems like most places I go don't bother.

Yes, bags are no longer free but take-out at fast food restaurants is no longer 100 won extra.

I'm still annoyed at her perplexing level of service, but yes it seems the bag charging must be selectively enforced. I sure didn't see her charge 20 won to the couple in front of me heating up a dosirak.

I'll be sure to bring in my exact change, all coins, next time.

Yes I was so pissed off she charged me 20 won, fuming, in fact - that's why I was laughing. And I don't have eyes. And she offered them the bag AFTER she rang them up and they paid.

The only thing that would tick me off is if I had to get change that had 10 won coins in it because of the charge. Those I throw out on the street.

If the 7-11's don't charge 20 won for the bag it's because having the change around in thier registers is a pain in the ass for them. They probably lose money from having to carry10 won coins.

In the USA products product prices require pennies in order for companies to make the proper profit they need, pennies are more conveniantly sized.

Fair enough but charging for plastic bags is a good idea anyway....

That was the law when I arrived in 2002, but like most laws in Korea, it wasn't always followed.
