Quote:
NEW YORK -- Police found an "amateurish" but potentially powerful bomb in a smoking sport utility vehicle in Times Square, then cleared the streets of thousands of tourists milling through the landmark district so they could dismantle it, authorities said Sunday.

"We avoided what we could have been a very deadly event," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said. "It certainly could have exploded and had a pretty big fire and a decent amount of explosive impact."

Investigators removed three propane tanks, consumer-grade fireworks, two filled 5-gallon gasoline containers, and two clocks with batteries, electrical wire and other components, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said at a news conference early Sunday. A black metal box resembling a gun locker was also recovered.

"I think the intent was to cause a significant ball of fire," Kelly said.

Bloomberg called the explosive device "amateurish" but potentially deadly, noting: "We are very lucky."

Crazy.

This seems to me another annoying scare story conveniently keeps the public distracted from how poorly the goverment is doing its job. Nobody got hurt, rght? It didn't go off. I'm from the US and I know 7, 000 people a month die from car accidents. Crime is way up. The economy is a wreck. I'm not surprised at all that the supposed terrorist was from Afganistan. As the Church Lady would say, "How conveeeenient!"

Actually he is from Pakistan.

Considering the government supposedly was behind 9/11 why wouldn't they have the car bomb go off?

If the government really wanted to create a distraction, I think it could do better than this. Why is it so hard to believe that out of billions of people on this planet, one of them might have decided to do something like this?

I don't know why these terrorist organizations keep picking idiots to do their work.

The guy should have done MANY things differently.

The biggest though is leave NY state and get on a bus for Canada. Flying from Toronto or Montreal back to the motherland would have been a hell of a lot easier.

I won't go into how he was a retard for buying the vehicle nearby, not taking measures to make sure the vehicle could not be identified such as removing the VIN and all traces of that, and changing the license plates.

I won't go into how he was an idiot in his bomb making techniques.

I don't agree with terrorism, but I think if you are going to put yourself on the line to life in prison or the death penalty, you need to use your damn head.

I guess I watch too much TV but if I could think of a few measures to save my butt, why can't the "professional terrorists" ?

I would say that the phrase "weapon of mass destruction" has now been rendered all but meaningless.

It really is taking on Orwellian proportions when I see so many here who usually wouldn't be so "light" about this sort of stuff - writing in just that vein.

I don't know what's up. Really don't - I'm Johnny Paycheck. However, if I had to bet , I'd think this can't be reality. Only someone who wanted it to be this bad, would have acted like this.

I hope someone replies to this post in 2 years. Finding the guy in Dubai, well to do and working another angle.

I realize you're speaking English here but I really have no idea what you're trying to say.

I go with Mr pink. However, isn't it very fortunate that the guy didn't have a clue. If he did it would have been a huge shock.
It's not a light thing, really, terrorists can infiltrate so easily and do great damage. It is just by virtue that most people are not killers.
I don't think this guy was a killer, perhaps his heart wasn't in it at all. He just had bad luck in his finance etc. But, if he wasn't really into it, why did he do that? Why make a bomb? That is what I want to know. Is there training while kids in Pakistan that that is the way to solve a problem?

I just read this guy comes from a wealthy family and had an MBA. All the more reason for me to wonder what was up with him. Losing his money and job isn't enough reason to go all terrorist.

Also, I hate to say it, but he has a wife and kids: what are going to happen to them now? I thought before he was a single guy...talk about selfish. I guess in his culture though, women and children don't count for much. I feel sorry for them, as I am sure they are being hounded by the press, and if they stay in the US, they will need to move and change their identity.

This guy should get a public execution. Seriously, that would be about what it takes to deter these morons from trying to do terrorism. Also, why the hell is everyone hell bent on destroying NYC? I am guessing Washington has too many cops and security...well guess what? NYC seems to be getting there too.
