I'm planning to fly over to Incheon in late August for a job starting in Seoul this September.
As I'll have summer free I'm thinking that it might be nice to stop in a few places on the way to Korea.
Does anyone have experience with employers agreeing to pay the equivalent to a flight fee from your home country even though you actually arrive from another destination?
In my case this would mean the employer paying about 1.1 million Won - which is around about the average for a single ticket from England.
I'm going to ask my recruiter about it as soon as my visa is processed but the reason I'm asking is that I did have an employer in Korea once who refused to do this - which I thought was slightly weird. |

Well, these days EPIK just gives entry and exit allowances instead of actual ticket compensation, so if you are working for a public school under EPIK's administration, I don't think this would be a problem. Beyond that, I don't know, but it's clearly something that's possible to work out with an employer. |

Many hogwans will pay out the equivalent cash for your basic trip cost from home to Korea so that you can come some other way. The good ones will pay you cash in lieu of airfare if you're already in Korea, if you don't need a visa run, and will pay you cash for your airfare at the end so you can travel.
It is a reasonable request to do this and really costs the school nothing, so they should do it. Some cheap employers will refuse. It seems that somehow they think that if they can save this bit of money they win the game - whatever that game is. |
