Im going to Tokyo in two months and want to find some (big, interesting, not the mom-and-pop corner joint) shops that sell manga/ graphic novels/ J-pop art. Also interested in any manga-themed cafes or any hangouts of artists. Or any cool places anybody can recommend( rock clubs, bars, whatever). I havent been to Japan in ten years and Tokyo as just an airport stop, so any tips would be appreciated. Thanks. |

used to live in Tokyo. Koenji on the chuo/sobu line....10 mins from Shinjuku is a cool place with a nice rock/punk music scene....also has some nice izakayas and yakitori places. The best ramen I`ve ate (and I`ve ate lots!) is in koenji. Can`t remember the name of the ramenya though.
The Awa Adori festival happens every August in koenji too. Highly recommended if you`re still around.
Nakano the station before is an awesome place for food also. Kichijoji on the same line a couple stations up has a nice lake and a good place to go for a walk (cherry blossom time is best but I guess of no use to you because of when you`re leaving). |

Murakano-
Thanks. What's Akihabara like? I only checked out the electronic shops before, but I hear that's where a bunch of manga and anime related stuff is now. |

At Nakano station, walk through the covered shopping area (you'll see it as soon as you walk out of the station) and enter the building at the end. Loads of interesting anime/manga related shops. |

That sounds cool. In that area I found a guesthouse called The Koenji - 2500 Yen singles. |

akihabara. its the manga part of the city. open game tournaments, manga, ppl dressed up as manga characters
also, was told youll find some of that in tabata.
harajuku is for the girls dressed up as maids.
as for cheap accomodation.. look for the capsule hotels. they are the cheapest version, if you are a guy. if you are a girl, stay with the guest house |

Akihabara is amazing. Head there Sunday morning and you should be able to catch the cosplay parade. It is where all the resident and out of towners gather and have a bit of a costume/fancy dress march through the area. A friend of mine and I had a fun time trying to find the most useless USB gadgets we could find there in the countless computer junk bins. I think I won with the usb breast massagers I found. Mandarake is an other really good place to check out. It is practically a museum of old toys as it is a second hand shop. You can find crazy old plastic Ultraman and Astro Boy stuff there. |
