I'm looking into teaching at an international school in Korea (not for the coming school year of course, but maybe the following year or the year after that). Reading the search results of this forum, there were suggestions to join one of these websites that have job postings:
TIE Online
ISS
Search Associates
ISR
I know that you have to pay to subscribe, but I don't know that I would pay to subscribe to all 4. If you had to choose 1 (or 2) of the above to register from, which one(s) would it be? I would need a site that has a "comprehensive" listing of job postings for Korea -- I'm only interested in teaching in Korea because I am a gyopo; I also have most of my relatives there.
I'm looking to teach high school math. I am certified, though it expires at the end of the calendar year, so I'm in the process of renewing. In Maryland, the certificate is valid for 5 years, and to renew you have to take 6 credits within 5 years. Speaking of which, do most of these international school jobs include some sort of travel allowance so I could return to the US and take classes over a summer, or something like that?
Thanks in advance for any responses.

Sorry if I wasn't clear -- I'm currently in the US. I'm taking my 6 credits right now at my old grad school so I can renew my certification.

Read and write Korean - naver is still your friend.
Google is pretty awesome too when it comes to finding the schools and addresses when you start sending off letters of interest and/or resumes/cv's.
To the best of my knowledge none of the international schools in Korea use those websites .... having said that, they may use a recruiter who may use one or another of those websites.
Because YOUR job search is so specific... use google or naver and search the available schools and send off letters of interest rather than try to find a job posting for any given school somewhere out there on the internet.

While Tom might know most things about Korea, this one isn't his area of expertise. (I would venture to say because it doesn't concern Korea per se)
Let me fill you in:
TIEOnline is a website that lists jobs as posted by schools. It isn't given priority in updating by potential schools, and thus you'll see jobs there that might have already been filled. I like this site because it is cheap ($40 a year) and gives you a general idea of what the job market is like. They also do a publication that is pretty good on information about international schools.
ISS/Search Associates are recruiters. I use Search. ISS is too expensive and has a lot of bad press. Search is how I got my current job. Just make sure you register 3 months or so before you are looking for a job. I would suggest doing it the summer before job season.
ISR is just a review site. If you pay you can see if schools have good or bad reviews. For Korea: there are no reviews on SFS, Songdo, Yongsan or Daegu International school. (Songdo and Daegu are new, so give it a year or two...) I like the site as it is nice to see what people are saying about schools, and Korea isn't the "holy grail" of international schools in Asia. You might want to live in a country besides Korea.
You should know though, they want previous experience in international schools...
Yes they provide travel to and from point of origin...I'm not sure about mid-contract in the summer, but if they don't, you should be able to pay it yourself considering how much they pay. |

As I said in my other response, this isn't your area of expertise. All those schools use Search or/and ISS in finding teachings. (SFS, KIS, SIS, and the other smaller IS are on there too...) |

Since you are limiting your search to Korea, it probably isn't a bad idea to find the contact information for all the international schools and prepare to send out your CV and cover letter at the start of hiring season.
International schools in Korea do use TIE, Search and ISS. I've been told that many of the larger international schools do the bulk of their hiring at recruiting fairs. Usually schools will list on their websites or in job advertisements which recruiting fairs they are attending, so you might want to register with Search or ISS in order to be able to attend one of these.
Good Luck!

Unfortunately, I still can't do either well, despite taking some language classes in Korea.

In any other country, I probably should some of the language, but I really have difficulties in learning languages in general.
When you say "previous experience," do you mean in international schools only, or in any school? This fall I'll be beginning my 7th year teaching HS math, in a private school. That should be sufficient, I assume.
Thanks to all for your responses.

If the school is accredited that is all that matters. (Western accredited I should clarify, as if you did say public school in Korea, that is accredited, just not with a Western accreditation body.)
I am not sure if Korean IS are looking at kyopos with Korean skills...your Korean skills would of course benefit outside work. My point is, don't put all your eggs in one basket. I too benefit more from working in Korea (F2 visa holder), but I took a job in China because that was what was the best job that was offered for fall 2009. Once my contract is up I will be trying again to get a job at a good Korean international school. Beware there are a bunch of lower tier schools...I took a pass on those as I figured a better school in China would look better on my resume.
Anyways, the hiring season will start around November. Make sure you take my advice above and are ready for November. |
