Venting on Daves is a useful tool for those living in Korea.

It provides an outlet for those who face incidents of complete stupidity while being forced to hold thier tounge. This is something that some of those who criticise peoples venting seem to fail to understand.

When forced to stand in class listening to your co-teacher tell your students to open the windows and then turn on the aircon, knowing that you cant criticise her lack of understanding on how aircon actually works.

Also knowing that you cant discuss the issue with other teachers at your school without being questioned as to 'if you don't like how things are done in Korea, then why are you here?'

Using Daves as a way of venting is a useful tool. Those on Daves who then come up with all the excuses for the Korean teachers action fail to understand one immutable fact, if I wanted to be criticised for disliking stupid actions simply because they were done by a 'korean' co-teacher, I would vent to my co-teachers.

Venting on Daves allows you to not hold in all those issues, that come from having to deal, view or put up with stupidity while holding your tounge simply because you are a foriegner in Korea.

Daves provides an opportunity to let it out and then get past the issue, thats why venting on Daves is useful to long term stability in Korea. Holding ones tounge for 1+ years is a sure fire way of going insane.

For those who don't regularly meet close friends or find that venting to aquaintances in Bars can cause arguments when all you want to do is let out how stupid you found an action. Venting on Daves (VOD) has its place.

I don't think there are that many of us who do not understand venting's place in the grand scheme of things. God knows I need to vent over some of the stupid things that go on here, in Canada, or in politics etc.

Yes venting is good.

What ISN'T good is the veiled racism, or the sweepingly general negative comments about Korea or its people.

Many of our comments come down to cultural differences ( which does not make us right and the Koreans wrong) or the stupidity of INDIVIDUALS who do not want to be wrong and or lose face.

Like right now, I am dealing with an incredibly stupid situation, my bosses don't see it and it is frustrating, but it comes down to a disagreement among VP's on educational policy and the one VP doesnt want to bend his position ( sticking to his guns) and the other VP doesnt want to piss him off. I have vented like crazy about this to my wife an a couple other buddies but in the end nothng will change, sure its frustrating.

My comments do not denegrate to "stupid idiot Koreans don't know how to............" thats where people like me draw the line, now you are not venting you are bashing an entire race of people for cultural idiosyncrasies we don't understand.

Also a lot of people who will "vent" are completely stuck up eltitist jerks who will do nothing for the school, assume that they will break the contarct on everything, and must be paid for everything.IN general everything annoys them, and they need to vent about pretty much everything, after a while many of us lose interest in this continued tirade.

Then of coure there are those who are getting royally screwed, like bent over a table and gang raped kind of screwed, and they have good cause to vent. MOst of these people get the sympathy and the helpful ear they need.

So I agree with you, but there is a line between venting and other abhorant comments.

Laughing

OP.....your problem is that you clearly don't understand Korean culture.........Koreans don't do anything wrong, they just do things Korean-style.......so if you ever see or go through something nonsensical in Korea, just remember the problem is with you.

PatrickinBusan and Urbanmyth will be along soon to confirm what I'm saying.

Ah, is that it. I would just consider my co-teacher stupid, but it seems to be a universal trait here, 'open window - turn on aircon'.

If I asked another teacher, why in Korea I see so many students and teachers put on air con and then open the window, while I would not expect to see the same actions in another country, I will be accused of being anti Korean.

Its not a Korean issue to my mind, its a stupidity issue. Venting online in my mind is a way of blowing off steam, as since the aircon has been turned on in my school I have experienced the same actions every day.

Today I spent 15 minutes hassling my students to close the door after they walked through it, close the windows as the Aircon is on. Yet my co-teacher walks in and tells them to open all the windows.

After 20 minutes of not feeling the slighest bit cooler, I turn it off. All the students want to know why I turned it off. I told them because Aircon doesn't work if the windows are open, the room wont get cooler.

So close the windows and I will turn it back on. I guess it bothers me, because it just goes against my logic. Also I have my mums expression rumbling through my mind "close the door, do you think we live in a tent?" every time I see a student walk in and leave the door open.

My dad can back this one up. I was yelled at enough times when I was younger for leaving the door open for more than 5 seconds when the air was on Laughing

He'd get a nosebleed (brain leaking from nose) from the "different way aircon works" here.

The teachers at your school must be exceptionally stupid because I've never witnessed this aircon on/windows open phenomena where I work. They open the windows when they put on the fans, but that's understandable because that [Mod Edit] will kill you.

They serve well as amusement value to provide a few laffs during the day.

OP's original point is good because many foreigners have few places to vent over cultural differences in this country.

What DOES one do without the Internet? Go out and socialize? Better oneself through self-study and exercise?

It's fairly common. I've only got one friend whose coteacher understands the aircon on/windows closed logic. All the rest are flabbergasted, as I am.
