I am looking for a Master's program in Education, preferably in TESOL but a closely related area would be fine too. I need to be able to take the classes completely online. I would like to get certified to teach but I run into the problem of needing a year long internship. A school that would allow me to do the internship overseas or return home for the internship the last year would be great. If I could get the degree, then figure out how to get certification through an alternative route, that would be perfect. Any advice will be appreciated. |

I think Deakin U in Australia offers a M'Tesol program that has a practicum component that allows you to teach in Aust...at least in the state where it is given...not sure if will allow to teach elsewhere...but you could check into it... |

If you know you're interested in teaching in public schools at home or in international schools, you might want to consider an MA + certification program. I just finished one in my home state and although it wasn't a completely online program, many courses were offered online. If I had wanted to I probably could have taken most of the core MA courses and other required courses online, and then would have had to go back home for a semester or two to take some of the required methods/practicum courses. The school offered the chance to complete the full time student teaching practicum abroad (Mexico, Belize and they were planning a program for Korea as well).
I'm sure that my university wasn't unique in any of this, and you might want to see whether universities in areas your interested in offer something similar. It was kind of a pain to work on the certification and the MA at the same time, but I'm definitely glad I did it. Having both the MA and the teacher certification helped me to find the job I wanted at an international school, but I think if you're looking more into working at universities throughout the world MA TESOL is probably a better way to go. I hope this is helpful. Good luck with your search! |

Yucca Girl, your program sounds like what I'm looking for. Which school did you go to? |

I, also, went through the whole process of searching for grad school options while in Korea, so if you have any questions about anything, I would be happy to share any insight or information I might have!
Happy hunting! |
