I was talking to my Korean language partner today, who is a doctor, about health insurance. Apparently, the government is trying to push through a series of reforms that would increase patient contributions, and eventually move to a privatized system, similar to the U.S. system. The changes are to take place starting next month, and are to be completed ten years from now.
Apparently, there is a huge contingent of doctors and hospital staff vehemently opposing the changes, but so far, to no avail.
She also tells me the changes are not being reported through the main channels of Korean media, i.e. televised news reports and major newspapers, because, of course, there would be huge protests.
Has anyone else heard about this? My Korean is not good enough to research political blogs or medical staff forums, so I can't verify the story myself, but, having fought tooth and nail with my U.S. health insurance providers, and having lost time and time again, I sure hope this kind of reform doesn't go through. |
