My employer seems to be very unhelpful on this matter..

i am unsure if I am automatically covered under the national medical insurance in korea by the fact that I am employed and am about to receive my alien registration card.....?

Should I be filling out a form or registering somewhere....also we don't receive a pay slip...I'm not too bothered as they pay in full on time and tax appears to be minimal but would this show medical insurance deductions if i was covered?

You are NOT automatically insured.

IF you are at a public school your employer will enroll you shortly after you get your ARC. About 2 weeks later you will get your NHIC booklet showing that you are insured.

Coverage information can be found on the English side of their website: http://www.nhic.or.kr/

IF you are at a hakwon it is most likely that you will NOT be insured (despite the fact that it is a legal requirement and a contractual obligation).

Bottom line: No NHIC booklet means NO NHIC insurance. You can CONFIRM whether or not you are insured by requesting information from the NHIC directly via their English phone line (business hours).

Hmm I started working for a public school in late May this year, and I was told by my co-teacher that I would not be covered for health insurance until I had been at the school for 3 months, even though I will have to pay for a full year. I smell something dodgy...

Once you receive your ARC, you can go to your local NHIC office in your "gu" and enroll yourself and your dependents without having others do it for you. That's how I did it for myself and my family. I waited a mere 30 minutes and got my booklet right there.
