Does anyone know the average starting salary for a Masters in Applied Linguistics? I looked online and from what I can see it varies a lot. Anywhere from 35,000 to 40,000 in the USA.
Does anyone have any insight? |

| Most importantly the US, and New York. The west coast wouldn't be too bad either, say in Cali, but NY is my home. |

| If you can land an "alternate route" teaching job as an ESL teacher at an American public school you might do pretty well. Do you speak Spanish by any chance? ESL is usually in high demand, so they might hire you and pay you to get your second MA in Education. |

I don't speak Spanish. I can speak Japanese though.
I would prefer a non-teaching position. They are more rare but fit me better.
Any ideas about average salaries? |

You mentioned 6 different jobs so it's a bit difficult to provide an answer. I know people working in those fields but I don't know what they earn. In my culture it's not polite to ask. Why don't you just look at job vacancy adverts and find out from there? |

If you've already attained this Masters Degree and did not do this research beforehand, that is kind of disconcerting.
If you are considering getting this Masters Degree and this is the extent of your research, that is kind of disconcerting. |

you need years of experience for that kind of thing. Those are not entry level positions. |

| I know a few people who write text books, they got approached by publishers at conferences. If you want to get into this I'd say get a few years teaching under your belt, then make a name for yourself on the conference circuit by giving workshops with your own high quality material. Even if publishers don't approach you directly, they are good places to meet publishers and find out what opportunities there are. |

I am comparing two ma degrees. Appling is 1/3rd the price. I am trying to figure out how many years of working with the expensive ma would I need to break even with the alternative ma. if you get what I am saying.
I have dug around for salaries. It seems 35-45k is pretty generous for starting salaries where as the other ma is 60-66k. |

I love this. Thanks for pointing it out. Those who don't teach and write textbooks will never have a "great" product, as it is missing the touches and elements that only a teacher who teaches in that area would know and care about. (Also, it is the best way to test out your product before you try to get people like us to buy it.) |

| Does anyone write TEFL text books who's never taught? Every time I look at the mug shots and bio info at the back of a TEFL text book the writers always have a background in teaching. As it should be. |
