A friend of mine back home is thinking of going to Korea after he finishes his degree. He is a recent Iraq War vet and has a life-time membership in the VFW. He has already decided to join the VFW chapter outside of Osan, but one thing he wants to know is what kind of benefits do VFW members get in Korea.
He heard from several sources that members could get access onbases in Korea somehow.
Are there any VFW members in Korea who could clarify this if possible?

This looks like an excellent place for your friend to direct his questions:

Thank you.
He has been to the website, but it doesn't give any information on the local benefits for membership.
The reason I am posting that question here is because there are many veterans who work in Korea as English teachers who might be able to give more insight into this if they are members of the VFW.

But thanks for the site.

Being a member of the VFW does not get one access to the bases. Those members who also happen to be retired military (or otherwise have miltary ID, such as Medal of Honor winners or family members of retired military) have access to the bases, but it has nothing to do with the VFW membership. If the OP's friend hasn't finished his MSO (Initial Military Service Obligation), currently set at eight years, then he has a military ID and has access.

A much better place to get information regarding base access at Osan is from the Pass & ID Section at 0505-784-4489.

Has your friend tried their "Contact" link?

If not, he should consider doing so. My experience with various VFW posts over several years is that the "Contact" link can be very effective in getting the information you want quickly and to the point.

That I'm not sure about his status since he now tells me he is considering going to Korea as an English teacher. He is getting out as a Staff Sergeant and as far as I know, his time in svc as an E-6 does prove that he did finish his MSO and his remaining MSO under retention.
From what he tells me, the guy he spoke to on the phone said it was possible. However, it was not mentioned on the benefits list and he doesn't want to go to Korea without knowing for sure.

Thanks CC for the definitive answer- we could always count on you Wink

My feeling is that he has already used the "contact" link and just wants to get information from members.
