One of my time fillers:

www.peopleofwalmart.com

I would like to see a people of itaewon site. Maybe even just a facebook page. I was there on Sunday and saw some interesting fellows.

On my old computer I had lots of pics of Itaewon scum. Pity I no longer have them. One or two Daves posters might've ended up recognizing themselves. Mr. Green

So you used to frequent Itaewon yourself, dear old Serge?

I think I went there once a month on average. Always preferred Hongdae and Shincheon when in the mood for a good old roister. I've nothing against Itaewon at all, though. I'm not one of those types. Good Lord no. But there are some rather horrid lager louts there - and that's just the women! Mr. Green

Into a higher class of establishment, dear old Serge?

I think Itaewon is rather over-rated, though I go now and again but haven't been in more than a year because it is too far away.

Why is it taboo to go to Itaewon? I don't feel taboo being in place offering some tolerance to diversity like I do elsewhere in the country. Yes, the Koreans in Quizno's speak English and don't seem so weirded out one bit on me being non-Korean like common elsewhere. It's the San Francisco Tenderloin district of Korea. While I'm not gay or wearing a mohawk or wearing shiny clothes, I feel more comfortable where diversity exists.

I agree it's a bit seedy and could be fixed up a bit to be more pleasing to the eye. Tacky is the word, but that doesn't stop me from getting my foreign food. Yo quiero Taco Bell!

What? My user name is too lame? Not cool enough to be credible?

Not sure it's taboo as such, but I think there's a view that some of the more freakish/thuggish/whatever foreign people who gather there tend to make a bad name for all of us.

Itaewon is a tiny multicultural anomaly in S. Korea. The only thing that really gives it a seedy air is the ever present military. Otherwise it's a tame widdle putty cat. But the air does smell bad in the summer heat.

Agreed.
Those military douche bags tend to ruin a good night.

The shopping is a joke.

They keep selling the same stuff year after year. Most of the ex-pat women here have this one t-shirt that is ugly, but not as ugly as the rest of them.

Most of the time, nothing that I like will fit me whether it's a bigee shop or a regular shop. My size is sorta average.

No one wants one of those "silk" nightgowns or the matching robe. They've probably been hanging in that shop for centuries.

I also can't figure out how those shops full of evening gowns stay in business. The same dresses have been on display for the entire 2 years that I've been here.

All the same, I do enjoy the diversity of restaurants and meeting up for Starbucks before church on Sunday mornings. The drunks are sleeping off their Saturday nights. The shopkeepers are cleaning sidewalks and sprucing up their stores, and it's a pleasant walk from there to our church in Hae Bong Chong.

I've only been to Itaewon once, and that was just to see what it was all about. I have nothing against Itaewon like some people seem to, but there really is nothing much there. Fast food restaurants, ugly clothes shops, fake chanel bags...what is the attraction? Maybe it's changed since I went last year but...

That's it. Western food is the attraction if don't go to plop down in a Canadian or German style bar for an imported cold one or partake in the gay lifestyle on the hill. In my opinion, Korea is the least interesting of Asian countries and probably the world. Well, that's probably part of how the ESL jobs in Korea become to pay more and offer a fuller benefits package over most other countries. It takes extra incentives to get people to go out of their way, but once you got them, you don't have to lay down the welcome mat and cater and entertain them.

A lot of the trouble makers at The Old Town Seoul Pub are actually English teachers.

Really? I remember a few pubs in Hiroshima having signs--and very polite signs they were too--that no military personnel were permitted inside due to the many fights and property damages. Is Itaewon so different? English teachers as rowdies. That sounds pretty cool!
