I teach with the EPIK program. I was informed today that I have no desk warming or summer camp responsibilities. This means that my summer vacation is from July 17th to August 23rd. I was told that I will have the same situation for winter vacation (which is almost 2 months). Has anyone ever had this privilege? I have already told the school about my plans to travel abroad for 10 days this summer. If I were to leave Korea a second time, could I get in trouble? I know they can check with immigration to see if I have left, but do you think they would bother? Thanks for your help.

Hello Mr. Time Off!!!! Nice to meet you. Lucky duck you. Laughing

Do I think they would bother checking? Not if they don't already keep micromanaging tabs on you and you don't pee them off. Did they tell you to keep your phone on and be available for last minute camp classes? If not, then I wanna tell you to enjoy your Fun Jet vacation.

Jeez, do you know why you can't get deals like this most of the time? Because people like you bragged about it and others complained, and they cut it out for everybody.

It doesn't effect me at all, but for your own sake, don't brag! Just be happy....

No offense, OP, but people bragging about time off is like people bragging about how much money they make. Except there are lots of people on here with the exact same contract as you, many of which have been here longer than you, who don't get your extra time off. Guess how you made them feel with this post? And guess what some of them are talking about with their supervisors right now? You don't wave around cash in public and you don't go boasting about your extra time off on daves. If not just for decency and tact, then at least for your own sake.

if I were you OP -

(1) get it in writing and/or (2) provide your school written notice your plans to be OUT OF THE COUNTRY (or at the very least the other side of Korea) during those dates so no one can change their mind and call you in to do whatever at the last minute (course we all know that's not likely, huh?)

good luck and enjoy! Laughing

Do you live in Gangwon, by any chance? Because I heard that they get a boatload of vacation time there, to make up for the fact that most of the province is in the middle of nowhere.

c'mon now. you are ruining it for thousands of people right now. like the dumb a** who pisses in the town's drinking water. kind of harsh, but you need to know.

What? Your vacation starts July 17th? That's weak. I was done a month ago. Who's awesome now?

Things change. Everyone last year had the same scenario at summer. Come winter and almost everyone was deskwarming. Enjoy your summer holiday, but book nothing for winter until you have it in writing. Smile

Good luck with the extra hols. Don't bother getting it in writing, because this will mean mean diddly squat when the school cancels your extra vacation: "It's not us, it's the POE saying you have to do camp and teach 22 hours etc."

I wouldn't pay any extra money for flights etc on the strength of what your school has told you. I believed my school last year, and it cost me a lot of inconvenienceand money (canceled flights etc). This 'miscommunication' also cost my old school their native speaker for 5 months (after I resigned).

Good luck.
